Susan Difford Commenting On...
DR80 Car Insurance
A drug driving conviction carries a stigma that goes beyond the legal penalties. Whether the drugs were prescribed medication, a one-off mistake, or something you are working to put behind you, the label can feel impossible to shake. But it does not make you uninsurable.
DR80 relates to driving or attempting to drive while unfit through drugs under Section 4(1) of the Road Traffic Act 1988. It carries 3 to 11 penalty points and stays on your licence for 11 years from the date of conviction. The court must impose a minimum 12-month driving ban, rising to at least 3 years for a second offence within 10 years.
Drug driving prosecutions in England and Wales have risen since roadside drug testing was introduced in 2015. Insurers view DR80 seriously because it combines drug impairment with actual driving. Standard insurers often decline, but specialist brokers know which insurers assess drug-drive convictions individually rather than issuing automatic refusals.
The 11-year endorsement period is long, but each clean year you build could help. Specialist brokers who handle convicted drivers every day understand how pricing changes as the conviction ages.
DG60 Car Insurance
A DG60 conviction is among the most devastating charges a driver can face. Causing someone's death while driving carelessly with a specified drug above the legal limit brings together grief, legal trauma, and an endorsement that stays with you for over a decade. If you are reading this, you may be dealing with more than an insurance problem.
The maximum sentence is life imprisonment, a minimum 5-year driving ban, and 3 to 11 penalty points that stay on your licence for 11 years. Very few insurers will accept an application with a DG60, and those that do will typically charge a significant premium.
Specialist brokers are not just useful here. They are essential. They maintain relationships with the handful of insurers who consider DG60 applications and understand how to present your case in a way that gives you a chance of being accepted.
DG40 Car Insurance
A DG40 conviction is often misunderstood, and that misunderstanding starts with the people closest to you. Being "in charge" of a vehicle while over the drug limit does not mean you were driving. You may have been sitting in a parked car, sleeping in the back seat, or simply holding the keys. The law treats access to the vehicle as enough.
That distinction matters, but it does not always feel like it when you are searching for insurance. The conviction carries 10 penalty points and stays on your licence for 4 years from the date of the offence. A driving ban is discretionary, not mandatory. Some drivers receive points only.
Specialist brokers draw a clear line between "in charge" and "driving" offences. They know which insurers weigh that distinction in your favour. That knowledge could make a meaningful difference to what you pay.
Motoring Conviction Codes
The UK uses over 80 motoring conviction codes, and each one affects your insurance differently. An SP30 for speeding might add a modest loading. A DR10 for drink driving could double or triple your premium for several years.
What matters most to insurers is the severity of the offence and how recently it happened. A 4-year-old speeding conviction carries far less weight than a recent drink driving charge. The number of points also plays a role, as drivers approaching 12 points may represent a higher risk of disqualification.
DG10 Car Insurance
A DG10 conviction carries a stigma that often goes beyond the legal penalty. Whether it involved a prescribed medication you did not realise was still in your system or a recreational substance, the result on your licence looks the same. That can feel deeply unfair, especially when the circumstances were not what people might assume.
The law sets near-zero tolerance limits for 17 specified controlled substances under Section 5A of the Road Traffic Act 1988. Around 20,072 people were sentenced for drug driving offences in England and Wales in 2024 (Home Office). The endorsement stays on your licence for 11 years, far longer than most motoring convictions.
Many mainstream insurers may not quote you with a DG10. Specialist brokers are familiar with insurers that consider drug driving convictions and understand the difference between the various circumstances that lead to this code. They could help you find a quote from insurers who treat your application individually.
