Understanding Road Tax (VED)

Vehicle Excise Duty, usually called road tax or car tax, is a charge for keeping or using a vehicle on a public road in the UK. What you pay can depend on the first registration date, CO2 emissions, fuel type and original list price.

Figures checked against GOV.UK on 4 August 2026 show that cars first registered from 1 April 2017 usually pay a standard 12-month rate of £200 from the second tax payment. Some cars above the relevant list-price threshold pay an extra £440 a year for five years. First-year rates depend on CO2 emissions and, for some diesel cars, the emissions standard.

Other registration periods use different rules. Tax rates can change, so confirm the current amount on GOV.UK before paying.

Why ULEZ And Clean Air Results Can Differ

A tax result and a clean air result answer different questions. Vehicle tax follows the DVLA record. A zone charge depends on the city, vehicle type, emissions standard, local exemptions and the journey.

  • London ULEZ - TfL applies its own London rules. Petrol cars generally need Euro 4 and diesel cars generally need Euro 6. The zone operates all day, every day except Christmas Day.
  • Clean Air Zones in England - Zones use classes A to D. Private cars are included only in Class D. Vans, taxis, buses and HGVs can be included in other classes.
  • Local differences - Boundaries, vehicle categories and exemptions can differ. A vehicle that avoids a charge in one city could be charged in another.
  • Final check - Treat this result as an indication based on available vehicle data. Confirm the journey with the official zone operator before travelling.

What Affects Vehicle Tax?

Road tax can vary a lot between vehicles. These are the main details that influence it.

Tax factorHow it affects VED
Registration dateOlder and newer vehicles can be taxed under different systems.
CO2 emissionsEmissions can affect the first-year rate and the band for many older vehicles.
List price when newSome higher-value newer cars can have an additional rate for several years.
SORN statusA vehicle kept off public roads can be declared SORN instead of being taxed.

What Our Expert Says

A tax result and a clean air result answer different questions. Tax follows the DVLA record, while a zone charge depends on the city, vehicle type and local exemptions.

Check the first registration date, fuel type and emissions standard together. Before a trip, use the official zone checker because boundaries and local rules can change.

Tax & ULEZ Checker FAQs

How Do I Check If A Vehicle Is Taxed?

Enter the registration above. The checker uses official DVLA data to show whether the vehicle is taxed, untaxed or has a SORN, plus the date the current tax is due.

Is This Vehicle Tax Check Free?

Yes. The tax status, available rate details and indicative ULEZ check are free, with no sign-up needed.

What Is A SORN?

A SORN is a Statutory Off Road Notification. It tells the DVLA a vehicle is kept off public roads, so it does not need taxing until used on the road again.

How Much Is My Car Tax?

It depends on when the car was registered, its CO2 emissions and fuel type. The checker shows the band and an indicative rate, but confirm the current figure on GOV.UK.

What Does The ULEZ Indication Mean?

The checker gives an indication from available vehicle data. Use the official TfL or local Clean Air Zone tool to confirm whether charges apply to your vehicle and journey.

Can I Set A Reminder For When My Tax Is Due?

Yes. After checking a vehicle you can set up a free email reminder before the tax, MOT or insurance is due.
