What the Writer Says…
CU50 is the DVLA endorsement code for causing or likely to cause danger by reason of load or passengers. It falls under Section 40A of the Road Traffic Act 1988, read with the Road Vehicles (Construction and Use) Regulations 1986. The offence covers three main scenarios: overloading a vehicle beyond its gross vehicle weight, carrying an unsecured or poorly secured load, and carrying more passengers than the vehicle is designed to hold.
The penalty is 3 points and a fine of up to £2,500, rising to £5,000 for goods vehicles. This offence is most commonly associated with commercial vehicles, vans, and tradespeople, though it can apply to any driver. A roofer with unsecured ladders, a builder whose van exceeds its weight limit, or a driver carrying too many people in a car could all receive a CU50.
