What the Writer Says…
CU40 is the DVLA endorsement code for using a vehicle with defective steering. It falls under Section 40A of the Road Traffic Act 1988, read with the Road Vehicles (Construction and Use) Regulations 1986. The regulations require that steering systems must be maintained in good working order and not be so worn or otherwise defective as to be a danger.
Defective steering covers a range of faults including excessive play in the steering wheel, worn track rod ends, damaged power steering systems, and any steering component failure that affects the driver's ability to control the vehicle safely. These defects are often identified during DVSA roadside inspections, police vehicle checks, or following accident investigations.
