Why Compare Cheval Liberté Horse Trailer Insurance?

A Wide Range Of Values

From a single Touring One to a MAXI Living Iconic, Cheval Liberté values vary a lot. Providers price that spread differently, so comparing helps you find cover that fits your model.

Security Is Down To You

No tracker or wheel lock comes from the factory, so what you fit and where you park shapes the quote. Some providers reward good storage and security more than others.

One Short Form

Clean Green Cars introduces you to UK insurance providers that offer horse trailer cover, so you can compare quotes for your Cheval Liberté without calling round.

Cheval Liberté Horse Trailer Insurance At A Glance

  • Who Makes Them - Cheval Liberté is a French family brand founded in 1995, with trailers built in its own factory in Poland. Cheval Liberté (UK) Ltd in Corwen has been the sole importer for the UK and Ireland since 2005.
  • Trailer, Not Horsebox - a Cheval Liberté is towed behind a car or 4x4. Your car policy normally provides third-party liability while you tow, provided it covers towing, but the trailer itself needs its own cover.
  • Every Current Model Within 3,500kg - the 2026 range runs from the Touring One at 1,600kg gross to the Maxi 3, Maxi 4 and MAXI Living at 3,500kg gross. A car licence covers all of them, within your car's towing limit.
  • Aluminium And Galvanised Steel - Cheval Liberté says it is the only maker to produce its own single-piece chassis. Most models pair anodised aluminium sides and floors with hot-dipped galvanised steel.
  • Warranty Isn't Insurance - new trailers carry a 2-year parts and labour guarantee plus 5 years on the aluminium floor and sides. Damage caused by horses and accident damage aren't warranty items.
  • Compare Quotes - see UK insurance providers that quote for your Cheval Liberté model, value, storage and tow car. The horsebox insurance hub covers other makers and driven boxes.

Do You Need Insurance For A Cheval Liberté Trailer?

Not by law, but without it the trailer itself is unprotected. By law the insurance has to be on the car that tows, not on the trailer. Liability to other people while you tow normally sits on the car policy, if it includes towing, but that policy is unlikely to pay for the trailer if it's stolen or damaged.

  • Check Your Car Policy Includes Towing - liability for damage you cause while towing normally comes from your car insurance, so confirm towing is included before the first trip
  • Separate Cover Protects The Trailer - a horse trailer policy is the usual way to cover theft, fire and accidental damage to the trailer and the tack inside it
  • Warranty Covers Faults, Not Accidents - Cheval Liberté's warranty booklet says damage caused by horses isn't covered, and tyres aren't included either. Trailer insurance may help where the warranty stops
  • Unhitched Is When It's Most Exposed - parked at home or at a yard, a trailer sits outside any towing cover, so read the security conditions a trailer policy sets before you buy

Towing Rules For A Cheval Liberté

Towing a Cheval Liberté is simpler than it used to be. Since 16 December 2021, anyone with a full car licence (category B) can tow a trailer up to 3,500kg MAM (maximum authorised mass) without a separate test, including people who passed before that date.

  • Car Licence From 1997 Onwards - you can tow a trailer up to 3,500kg MAM, as long as the car and trailer together don't exceed 7,000kg MAM and you stay within the car's own towing limit. If B+E isn't on your photocard yet, DVLA adds it when you next get a new one.
  • Passed Before 1 January 1997 - older licences usually allow a vehicle and trailer up to 8,250kg combined, shown as C1E with code 107. Those rights normally stop at 70 unless renewed with a medical.
  • Check Two Plates - the trailer's plate gives its MAM, from 1,600kg on a Touring One to 3,500kg on a Maxi 4. Your car's VIN plate or handbook gives its towing limit and gross train weight, and the loaded car and trailer together must not go over it.
  • Brakes, Breakaway Cable And Mirrors - a trailer over 750kg loaded must have working brakes, and you must use the breakaway cable or secondary coupling. Horse trailers are usually wider than the car, and GOV.UK says towing without proper mirrors can mean up to £1,000 and 3 points.
  • Speed Limits When Towing - 50mph on single carriageways and 60mph on dual carriageways and motorways. Towing also keeps you out of the right-hand lane on any motorway with three or more lanes.

Welfare In Transport For Cheval Liberté Owners

Towing your horse in a trailer doesn't change the welfare-in-transport rules. They're the same for trailers and horseboxes, and come from The Welfare of Animals (Transport) (England) Order 2006 and Council Regulation (EC) No 1/2005. A purely leisure trip with your own horse falls outside them. If you ride professionally, run a livery or are paid to move horses, you're likely to fall inside them.

When Authorisation Applies

Journeys of more than 65km (about 40 miles) in connection with an economic activity need APHA transporter authorisation. You need type 1 for journeys up to 8 hours, and type 2 for journeys over 8 hours.

Competence, Approval And Logs

For in-scope horse journeys over 65km, whoever drives or attends the horses needs a certificate of competence. Vehicle approval is for journeys over 8 hours. Journey logs are only for trips over 8 hours from Great Britain to another country carrying unregistered horses.

Registered Horses

Horses count as registered if they're on an EU-recognised studbook or registered with a national branch of an international racing or competition organisation. They skip journey logs and the journey-time, rest and feeding rules, but in-scope transporters still need authorisation and an animal transport certificate.

Trailer Cover Levels Explained

Leave a Cheval Liberté on car cover alone and a theft from the yard could mean replacing the trailer yourself. Here's what each level of trailer cover usually includes.

Cover details and conditions vary among insurance providers, so read the policy wording before you choose.

Cover Tip: The 2026 range runs from a Gold Origins with plywood floor and walls to a MAXI Living Iconic with a full living area, so values vary widely. State the exact model, whether it's aluminium or plywood, and any options. On a newer aluminium trailer, agreed value fixes the payout before anything goes wrong.

What May Not Be Covered

The tow car's policy, the trailer policy and the warranty each stop somewhere different. Here's what a standard Cheval Liberté trailer policy may not cover.

Standard Exclusions

  • Theft Without The Stated Security - If the policy names a hitch lock, wheel clamp or tracker and it wasn't in place, a theft claim may be turned down. Cheval Liberté doesn't fit these at the factory, so check what the policy asks for and fit it before the cover starts.
  • Towing Beyond Your Car's Limits - Going over the tow car's gross train weight is outside the law and may complicate any claim. A loaded Maxi 3 or Maxi 4 can reach 3,500kg, so check your car's VIN plate or handbook before you hitch up, especially after changing cars.

Important Limitations

  • Changes And Options Not Declared - A living fit-out added to a MAXI Living Unfitted, extra partitions, cameras or other changes alter the value and the risk. Anything not declared may not be paid for in full, so list the options and changes when you quote.
  • Hire, Reward And Prize-Money Use - Hiring the trailer out or towing other people's horses for payment is usually outside a private trailer policy. Towing for prize money counts as commercial for DVSA, and over 3,500kg combined that usually means an operator licence too, on top of business cover.
  • Tack Above The Standard Limit - A good saddle, bridle and set of rugs can be worth more than a standard contents limit. Higher-value tack usually needs listing separately on the quote or covering under a dedicated tack policy.
  • Horse Damage, Wear And Tyres - Some policies exclude damage caused by the horses themselves, and the warranty doesn't cover it either. Worn tyres, tired suspension and a worn plywood floor are maintenance issues rather than accidents, so read the wording if you travel a horse that kicks.

Extras Worth Considering

If the car breaks down with a loaded Maxi 3 behind it, ordinary car recovery may not be enough. These optional extras may be worth adding.

Recovery that can move the tow car, the trailer and the horses together if you break down. Some car breakdown policies don't cover a trailer or won't carry horses, so check before you rely on yours.

Raises the limit for saddles, bridles, rugs and show kit kept in the tack area. Useful on a Maxi 3, which has a tack room, or if you leave kit in the trailer between shows.

Covers bedding, cooking kit and personal belongings in the living area of a MAXI Living. Standard contents cover may only extend to tack, so check if you stay away at competitions.

Adds more days of trailer cover abroad for competitions, clinics or stud visits. A trailer over 750kg must also be registered with DVLA to tow it to most of Europe, and GOV.UK says that costs £26 the first time.

What Affects The Cost?

The model, its value and where it's parked overnight shape a Cheval Liberté quote most. Here are the factors insurers look at.

Key FactorImpact on your price
Model and valueA Touring One, a Maxi 4 and a MAXI Living Iconic sit at very different values, and a higher value usually means a higher premium.
Age and build materialSome versions have plywood floors and walls, others aluminium. Insurers may ask which you have, because it affects repair cost and value on an older trailer.
Overnight storageA locked yard, barn or secure compound usually prices better than an open drive or field, because the trailer spends most of its time unhitched.
Security devicesA hitch lock, wheel clamp and tracker may help reduce the quote, and some providers make them a condition on higher-value trailers.
Home or yard postcodePostcodes with more trailer and vehicle theft tend to price higher, especially if the trailer is kept somewhere quiet overnight.
Agreed valueA higher agreed value usually lifts the premium, but it's what you'd be paid if the trailer is stolen or written off, so it should match the model and options.
Tow car declaredThe car you tow with, and whether it's rated for the trailer's weight, can feed into the quote. A car well within its towing limit may be seen as a lower risk.
Driver age and towing experienceA long towing history and a clean licence tend to help. New drivers, or anyone who hasn't towed before, may see higher quotes.
How the trailer is usedLeisure use is priced differently from hire, paid transport or regular competing for prize money, and some of these need business cover.
No-claims historySome providers recognise a no-claims discount (a reduction for years without a claim), and a clean history on other policies may help the price.

What you're quoted will depend on your own details.

Price Insight: A single Touring One and a MAXI Living with a fitted living area sit at very different values, so they rarely price alike. Quote the exact model name from the plate or paperwork, not a nickname from an advert, and give the year and the floor material.

Ways To Help Reduce Your Premium

A trailer that sits unhitched most of the week is priced mostly on where and how it's kept. These steps may help bring the cost down.

1

Keep It Locked Up When Unhitched

A gated yard, locked barn or secure compound, declared accurately, tends to make the biggest difference on a trailer that spends most of the week parked.

2

Add A Hitch Lock And Wheel Clamp

The factory spec doesn't include a tracker or wheel lock. Adding a hitch lock, wheel clamp or tracker may help the quote, and some providers require them on higher-value trailers.

3

Record The Chassis Number

Note the chassis number, keep the purchase invoice and photograph the trailer and any options. It helps prove ownership and value, and may help police identify it if it's stolen.

4

Set An Honest Agreed Value

Base the value on the model, its age and its options. Under-insuring to save on the premium can leave you short if the trailer is stolen or written off.

5

Check What The Car Policy Already Does

Your car policy normally covers liability while towing, so you don't need to buy that twice. Confirm towing is included, then focus the trailer policy on theft and damage.

6

Pay Annually If You Can

Paying for the year in one go avoids the interest that monthly payments often carry, which can add up over a full year of trailer cover.

Saving Tip: Cheval Liberté doesn't list a factory tracker, alarm or wheel lock, so the security on your trailer is what you add. A hitch lock, a wheel clamp and locked storage, declared accurately, tend to help the price, and some providers ask for them on higher-value trailers.

What Our Expert Says

Cheval Liberté owners usually get the towing side right. The gaps tend to be in what the car policy, the warranty and the trailer cover each do.

A common scenario is an owner whose Maxi 2 is a couple of years old and still under its 5-year floor and sides guarantee. A horse kicks through a panel on the way home. The owner assumes the warranty will sort it, but the warranty booklet says damage caused by horses isn't covered. The car policy is unlikely to help either, because it covers liability to others, not the trailer. Only a trailer policy with accidental damage cover could respond, and only if the policy wording includes horse damage.

The other one is the tow car. A Maxi 3 or Maxi 4 has a gross weight of 3,500kg, which is within a car licence but beyond many cars' towing limits. If you change your tow car, check the new car's VIN plate for its towing limit and gross train weight before your first trip, and tell both insurers about the change.

Cheval Liberté Trailer Questions

Does My Car Insurance Cover My Cheval Liberté?

Only for liability while you tow, and only if your policy covers towing. Third-party liability for damage you cause while towing normally comes from your car insurance. Your car policy is unlikely to pay out if the trailer itself is stolen or damaged, so separate trailer cover is the usual way to protect it and the tack inside.

Can I Tow A Maxi 4 On A Car Licence?

Yes, if your car can take it. Since 16 December 2021 a full car licence lets you tow a trailer up to 3,500kg MAM, and the Maxi 3, Maxi 4 and MAXI Living have a gross weight of 3,500kg. The car and trailer together mustn't exceed 7,000kg MAM, and the loaded combination must stay within the car's gross train weight on its VIN plate.

Does A Cheval Liberté Trailer Need An MOT?

No. A horse trailer with standard overrun brakes towed by a car doesn't need an MOT or annual test. In the UK it doesn't have its own registration either, and carries the same number plate as the car towing it. It still has to be roadworthy, with working lights, legal tyres and working brakes every time you tow.

Does The Cheval Liberté Warranty Cover Accident Damage?

No. New trailers come with a 2-year parts and labour guarantee and 5 years on the aluminium floor and sides against rust and moisture. The warranty booklet says damage caused by horses isn't covered, and tyres aren't included. Accident and theft are matters for insurance, not the warranty.

Do I Need To Register My Trailer To Take It To France?

Yes, if it's over 750kg, which covers every model in the current range. GOV.UK says you must register trailers over 750kg to tow them to or through most of Europe, carry the certificate and fit the trailer's own plate. It costs £26 the first time. Ireland and Spain are exceptions, but not if you pass through France to get there.

Do Welfare Rules Apply If I Tow My Own Horse To A Show?

No, if it's purely leisure. Transporter authorisation applies to journeys over 65km (about 40 miles) in connection with an economic activity, and the rules are the same for trailers as for horseboxes. Professional riders, liveries and anyone paid to move horses usually need type 1 authorisation for journeys up to 8 hours.

Are Older Cheval Liberté Trailers Harder To Insure?

Not usually, but the details matter more. Older names you'll see second-hand include the 2002 XL, Minimax and Optimax, and some versions have plywood rather than aluminium floors and walls. Give the insurer the model name, the year and the floor type, and check the floor before you buy.

What Happens After I Submit My Details?

Clean Green Cars introduces you to UK insurance providers or regulated brokers that offer horse trailer cover for your Cheval Liberté, based on the model, its value, your tow car and where it's kept. Quotes usually appear within minutes, and you can compare cover, price and extras before choosing a policy.
