Why Compare DAF Horsebox Insurance?

Weight Changes Who Will Quote

A 7.5t DAF LF and a 26t CF can sit with different providers. Compare quotes that reflect your real plated weight rather than a blanket horsebox rating.

Matching Details Avoid Problems

Your V5C body type and weight should match the converted DAF, and your insurer should hold the same details. A mismatch can cause trouble at claim time.

Agreed Value Protects The Build

A coachbuilt DAF with living space can lose out on a market-value settlement. Clean Green Cars introduces you to UK insurance providers offering horsebox cover, so you can compare agreed value on a DAF in one short form.

DAF Horsebox Insurance At A Glance

  • Built On DAF Trucks, Not Vans - Every DAF horsebox is a truck build. DAF says its LF range runs from 7.5 to 19 tonnes GVW, so there's no 3.5t DAF box you can drive on a car licence.
  • The LF Is The Classic Choice - Most DAF horseboxes sit on the LF or LF45 at 7.5t or 12t, with the LF55 used for heavier builds such as Equi-Trek's 16,000kg Explorer. DAF builds every LF at its Leyland Trucks plant in the UK.
  • Newer XB And Heavier CF - Some coachbuilders now offer the DAF XB for new 7.5t builds, while the bigger CF carries 18t and 26t boxes, including builds with sleeping space on board.
  • Coachbuilt In Britain - The stalls, ramp and living area are added by a UK coachbuilder such as Empire, Equi-Trek, Oakley, JTH, I.C.E or Equine Quality. Your insurer will usually want to know who built the body and when.
  • Over 3,500kg Rules Apply - Every DAF horsebox is over 3,500kg, so it takes the HGV annual test each year and needs at least a C1 licence. If it isn't used for business, it can be taxed as a Private HGV.
  • Compare Quotes - see UK insurance providers that quote for your DAF chassis, plated weight and use. Start with the horsebox insurance hub for wider guidance.

Is Insurance Required For A DAF Horsebox?

Yes. By law you need at least third party insurance to drive a DAF horsebox on a road or other public place, whether it's a 7.5t LF or a 26t CF. GOV.UK says driving uninsured can mean a £300 fixed penalty and 6 penalty points, and the police can seize the vehicle.

  • Public Road Use Needs Cover - The Road Traffic Act sets third party cover as the minimum before the lorry leaves your yard. If an uninsured case goes to court, the fine is unlimited and you could be disqualified.
  • SORN Off-Road Storage - A DAF horsebox kept off the road and declared SORN does not need insurance by law. Laid-up cover for fire and theft can still protect a parked LF over the winter.
  • V5C Details Must Match - After a conversion you must tell DVLA so the V5C body type matches the vehicle. DVLA decides the description and may inspect it, so give your insurer the same details.
  • Provider Conditions Matter - Some providers may ask for secure storage, an immobiliser or a tracker on a higher-value CF or new XB build. Check any condition before you buy, because breaking it can affect a claim.

DAF Horsebox Licence Requirements

Every DAF horsebox needs more than a car licence. The plated weight (MAM, the maximum authorised mass shown on the V5C and chassis plate) decides the category, and DAF boxes run from 7.5t on an LF to 26t on a CF.

  • Category B (Standard Car Licence) - covers a petrol or diesel vehicle up to 3,500kg MAM only. No DAF horsebox is that light, so a car licence on its own never covers driving one.
  • Category C1 (Medium Vehicle) - covers 3,500kg to 7,500kg MAM, which is where 7.5t LF, LF45 and XB boxes sit. A car licence from before 1 January 1997 usually includes C1, so check your entitlement online first. Passed later? You'll need a theory test plus off-road and on-road practical tests.
  • Category C (Large Goods Vehicle) - above 7,500kg MAM you need a full category C licence. That takes in 12t LF45 boxes, 16t LF55 builds and 18t to 26t CF boxes. Pre-1997 rights stop at 7,500kg, so they don't cover a 12t DAF.
  • Tachograph And CPC Rules - Over 3,500kg, drivers' hours and tachograph rules can apply. Private leisure use up to 7,500kg is exempt, but commercial use, or any use of a 12t or heavier DAF, usually is not. Driver CPC is needed for commercial driving, while hobby journeys are exempt. Check DVSA's guidance for your use.
  • Check The Plate, Not The Model - The same DAF model can turn up at different plated weights, so an LF55 or CF badge won't tell you the category on its own. Read the MAM on the V5C and plate before you drive or quote.

Welfare In Transit Rules For DAF Horsebox Journeys

Your licence covers the driving. The welfare-in-transport rules, run by APHA (the Animal and Plant Health Agency), cover the journey itself. Here's what to know before a longer trip in a DAF that moves horses for any kind of business.

Type 1 Or Type 2 Transporter Authorisation

Horse journeys of more than 65km (about 40 miles) linked to an economic activity need APHA transporter authorisation, whether the box is a 7.5t LF or a 26t CF. Type 1 is for trips up to 8 hours, type 2 for anything longer. Professional riders and liveries are inside the rules.

Competence Certificates And Journey Logs

Drivers and attendants need a certificate of competence for in-scope horse journeys over 65km, and trips over 8 hours also need vehicle approval. A journey log is only needed for journeys over 8 hours to another country with unregistered horses. Section 1 goes to APHA at least 2 working days before you travel.

Registered Horse Exemption

A horse counts as registered when it's on an EU-recognised studbook or with a national branch of an international racing or competition organisation. Registered horses don't need a journey log and aren't bound by the journey-time, rest and feeding rules. Authorisation and an animal transport certificate still apply to in-scope transporters.

Cover Levels Explained

Pick third party only on a coachbuilt DAF LF and a fire or theft could leave you paying for the whole lorry and its living area yourself. Here's what each level usually includes.

FeatureComprehensiveThird Party, Fire & TheftThird Party Only
Liability to third parties (legal minimum)YesYesYes
Fire and theft of the DAF horseboxYesYesNo
Accidental damage to the DAF cab and coachbuilt bodyYesNoNo
Tack and personal effects in transitOften included up to a limitProvider-dependentNo

Personal accident cover for driver and passengerTypically yesProvider-dependentNo

Please note that policy features, benefits, terms and conditions vary among insurance providers, so always check the policy wording.

Cover Tip: On most DAF horseboxes, the LF or CF cab is a standard DAF truck, but the coachbuilt body, partitions, ramp and living area tend to drive the size of a claim, and usually only comprehensive covers accidental damage to them. Agreed value, tack in transit and custodial liability (also called care, custody and control, the cover for horses on board that you don't own) are separate terms to check on each quote.

What May Not Be Covered

One wrong detail on the form, such as the plated weight or an undeclared change of use, can leave a DAF horsebox claim unpaid. Here's what a standard DAF horsebox policy usually doesn't cover.

Standard Exclusions

  • V5C Details That Don't Match - Cover may be refused, or a claim reduced, if the V5C body type or plated weight doesn't match what's on the quote. After a coachbuilder converts a DAF chassis, update the V5C and give your insurer exactly the same details.
  • Undeclared Coachbuilder Or Living Area - Changes such as an added living area, a pop-out, extra stalls, a new ramp or self-build work that you haven't declared may invalidate cover. Name the coachbuilder, such as Empire, Oakley or I.C.E, and list every change on the quote form.
  • Driving Outside Licence Entitlement - Driving a 7.5t DAF LF on a car licence alone, without C1 or pre-1997 rights, is outside your entitlement and may invalidate the policy. The same applies to a 12t LF45 or a CF over 7,500kg without a full category C licence.
  • Undeclared Business Or Prize Money Use - Carrying other people's horses for payment or fuel money, or competing for prize money, while the policy is rated on social, domestic and pleasure use may be excluded. Business use usually needs a commercial horsebox policy, and over 3,500kg an operator licence too.

Important Limitations

  • Weight Changes Without Telling Your Insurer - Some heavier boxes are downplated to 7,500kg so a C1 driver can take them. Changing the plated weight of a DAF without updating the V5C and telling your insurer may invalidate cover, so the MAM on the quote should match the plate.
  • Storage Or Security Breach - Some providers set conditions such as a tracker, an immobiliser or locked yard storage on higher-value DAF builds. Failing to meet a stated condition may invalidate a theft or vandalism claim, even if the rest of the policy is in order.

Extras Worth Considering

Skip HGV-rated breakdown on a 12t LF and a roadside fault could leave your horses waiting hours for a truck big enough to recover it. These optional extras may be worth adding to a DAF horsebox policy.

A DAF with berths on board suits longer trips, including events abroad. Extended European cover at comprehensive level, rather than the basic legal minimum, may be worth adding before you go. Horses heading to the EU need an export health certificate as well.

Standard car-style recovery usually cannot lift a 7.5t LF, let alone an 18t CF. An HGV-rated breakdown add-on with horse onward-care or temporary livery may stop a roadside fault becoming a welfare problem for the horses on board.

On a coachbuilt DAF from a builder such as Equi-Trek, Equine Quality or JTH, agreed value fixes the payout figure with the provider when the policy starts. That's instead of relying on a market valuation that may not reflect the build at claim time.

Saddles, rugs and show kit in the lockers, plus liability for horses you don't own, may not be fully covered by a base policy. A tack-in-transit and custodial extension can raise the limits to fit what a 12t DAF with several stalls actually carries.

What Affects The Cost?

The declared value of the build, the plated weight, how you use the box, your licence history and where it's parked overnight all move a DAF horsebox quote. Here's how each one tends to play out on a DAF.

Key FactorImpact on your price
Declared vehicle valueA DAF horsebox can be an older LF with a simple body or a new XB or CF build with living space, so values vary widely. Quotes usually follow the declared value of the whole vehicle rather than the engine size.
DAF chassis modelA 7.5t LF or XB box usually prices below a 16t LF55 or 26t CF of similar age, partly because the bigger lorry tends to be worth more and needs a category C driver.
Maximum Authorised Mass (MAM)Premiums tend to step up from 7.5t (LF, LF45, XB), through 12t and 16t (LF45, LF55), to 18t and 26t (CF). Read the plated weight from the V5C, because the same DAF model can be plated at different weights.
Use typeSocial, domestic and pleasure use usually prices lowest, business equestrian use such as livery or eventing sits in the middle, and paid transport of other people's horses prices highest on a DAF horsebox.
Driver age and licence historyExperienced drivers with a long clean licence, the matching C1 or C entitlement and previous horsebox experience usually price lowest. Younger drivers, or anyone without the category the DAF's plated weight needs, may pay more or be turned down.
Claims and conviction historyA clean claims record on any motor policy usually helps the price. Recent motoring convictions, even ones picked up in a car, can push a DAF horsebox quote up.
Overnight storageA locked yard or CCTV-covered compound usually prices lowest, a private driveway or barn sits in the middle, and parking a large DAF on the street often prices highest.
Annual mileageMost leisure horseboxes cover a modest mileage, while a DAF used for business may cover far more. Give a realistic figure rather than a car-style default so the quote fits how the box is really used.
Home postcodeQuieter rural postcodes often price below higher-theft urban areas, and a DAF horsebox quote responds to local theft and weather risk in much the same way as car cover.
Security devices fittedA Thatcham-approved alarm, immobiliser, tracker or wheel lock may help the quote on a DAF, and some providers require approved security on higher-value 12t and CF builds.

Every DAF quote is worked out on your own details.

Price Insight: A DAF horsebox can be anything from an older 7.5t LF with a simple body to a new 12t build with living space, so declared values vary widely. Prices tend to follow the value of the coachbuilt body, the plated weight and whether the box is used for business, rather than the DAF badge itself. Give the coachbuilder's name, the build year and the chassis model so the quote reflects the whole vehicle.

Ways To Help Reduce Your Premium

Renew without checking and a DAF horsebox policy can drift above what a fresh comparison shows. Here are practical ways to keep the price in check.

1

Match The V5c To The Build

Check the V5C body type and plated weight match your DAF after its conversion, and give your insurer the same details. A quote based on the wrong description may be priced wrongly or cause trouble at claim time.

2

Declare Secure Yard Storage

Declare a locked yard, a CCTV-covered compound or gated farm storage, but only where that's genuinely where the DAF lives. Secure storage tends to be one of the biggest levers on the price, especially for higher-value builds.

3

Fit Approved Security On Higher-Value Builds

Fit a Thatcham-approved alarm, immobiliser or tracker on a new XB, a 12t LF or a CF. It may help the quote, and some providers require approved security on agreed-value DAF horseboxes.

4

Declare The Plated Weight Exactly

Quote the MAM shown on the V5C and chassis plate, not the badge on the cab. The same DAF model can be plated at 7.5t, 12t or more, and a mismatch may lead to a wrongly rated policy.

5

Declare Limited Mileage Where Honest

Give a realistic mileage if your DAF only goes out at weekends and in the competition season. A limited mileage discount, where the provider offers one, may reduce the quote on a box that spends most of the year parked.

6

Pay Annually If You Can Afford It

Pay for the year upfront where you can. Monthly instalments usually add APR (the credit interest charged on the instalments), which can add a noticeable amount to a policy on a higher-value DAF.

Quote Tip: Matching the V5C and plated weight on the form, declaring a locked yard or CCTV-covered storage, fitting an approved tracker on a higher-value LF or CF and giving a realistic mileage tend to move a DAF horsebox quote the most. A car-style mileage guess on a box that mostly goes out in the competition season can mean paying for miles it never drives.

How To Compare Quotes

Comparing quotes for a DAF horsebox from UK insurance providers usually takes a few minutes. Get started above when you're ready.

1

Share Your Details

Enter the DAF chassis (LF, LF45, LF55, XB or CF), the build year, the coachbuilder, the plated weight, the declared value and your postcode. The form takes a few minutes.

2

Confirm The V5c Details

Check the V5C body type and weight match the vehicle, then declare the coachbuilder, any re-plating, the living area, a pop-out, solar panels or interior work since the original build.

3

Compare Cover Levels

Put third party, fire and theft and comprehensive side by side, then read the tack-in-transit, custodial liability and agreed value terms on each quote for your DAF.

4

Weigh Add-Ons

Decide on European cover, HGV-rated breakdown with horse onward-care, agreed value and custodial liability based on the DAF's weight, its value and whether other people's horses ever travel.

5

Set Your Start Date

Choose when the DAF's cover should start. The provider issues your certificate and adds the DAF to the Motor Insurance Database (MID) once payment is complete.

What Our Expert Says

Most DAF horseboxes are built on the LF at 7.5t or 12t, and that weight split shapes almost everything about the cover. Kevin Parker Horseboxes insisted on DAF trucks for its 7.5 and 12 tonne boxes from 2001, which helped make the LF a standard choice for private owners.

The detail people miss is the jump from 7.5t to 12t. A pre-1997 licence usually covers a 7.5t LF, but a 12t LF45 needs a full category C licence, and private use above 7,500kg usually brings in tachograph rules. Quote the plated weight from the V5C, not the weight you think the box is, and check that whoever drives it holds the matching category.

The other one is use. DVSA counts prize money and indirect payment as commercial use for operator licensing, so a box that heads to competitions with prize money, or carries a friend's horse for fuel money, may not be pure leisure. Tell your insurer exactly how the box is used and quote on the matching use class.

Common Questions

Do I Need C1 To Drive A 7.5t DAF LF Horsebox?

Yes. A 7.5t LF, LF45 or XB sits between 3,500kg and 7,500kg MAM, which is category C1. If you passed your car test before 1 January 1997, your licence usually includes C1, so check your entitlement online. If you passed later, you'll need a theory test plus off-road and on-road practical tests before you drive one.

Do I Need A Full HGV Licence For A 12t DAF?

Yes. A 12t LF45, a 16t LF55 or an 18t to 26t CF is over 7,500kg MAM, so you need a full category C licence. Pre-1997 car licence rights stop at 7,500kg, so they don't stretch to these boxes. Private use above 7,500kg can also bring in tachograph and drivers' hours rules, so check DVSA's guidance before the first trip.

Does A 12t DAF Cost More To Insure Than A 7.5t LF?

Often, yes. A 12t DAF usually carries a higher declared value, more stalls and more living space than a 7.5t LF, and it needs a category C driver. The gap may be smaller if the 12t box is on private use only and the 7.5t box does business work. Comparing quotes for your exact plated weight is the way to see the real difference.

Can I Insure A DAF Horsebox On Private Use Only?

Yes. Many owners run a DAF LF on social, domestic and pleasure use for their own hunting, showing or eventing, and that rating usually holds where it's honest. It changes once other people's horses travel for payment or the box is used for a business. DVSA also counts prize money as commercial use for operator licensing, so tell your insurer if you compete for prizes.

What's Custodial Liability On A Horsebox Policy?

It's cover for your legal liability for a horse on board that you don't own. Insurers also call it care, custody and control. On a 12t DAF with four or more stalls, it can matter for liveries moving client horses, hunt members carrying a friend's horse or anyone who takes another person's horse, even now and then. It's usually an add-on rather than standard.

Does A DAF Horsebox Need HGV-Rated Breakdown Cover?

Usually yes. Every DAF horsebox is a truck of 7.5t or more, and standard car-style recovery can't lift or tow one. An HGV-rated breakdown add-on with horse onward-care may stop a roadside fault turning into a welfare problem. On an 18t or 26t CF, check the recovery limit covers the full plated weight, because some policies set a weight cap.

Do I Need APHA Transporter Authorisation For My DAF Horsebox?

Only if you move horses more than 65km (about 40 miles) in connection with an economic activity. Moving your own horse purely for leisure is outside the rules. Professional riders, liveries and anyone paid to move horses are inside them, and need type 1 or type 2 authorisation and certificates of competence on top of their insurance.

What Happens After I Submit My Details?

Clean Green Cars introduces you to UK insurance providers or regulated brokers that offer horsebox cover for your DAF chassis, plated weight, use and storage. You'll usually see quotes within minutes and can compare cover, price and add-ons before choosing a policy that suits your LF, XB or CF and the way you actually use it.
