Why Compare Peugeot Motorhome Insurance?
A Minority Base With Its Own Details
The Boxer shares its X250 design with the Ducato but carries Peugeot engines, warranty and roadside cover. Providers may not all rate it the same way, so prices for the same driver can differ.
Weights Either Side Of 3,500kg
From a 3,499kg Whirlwind GT to a 4,500kg Autograph, the plate changes your licence and tax class. Comparing shows which providers are comfortable with heavier Boxers and your licence.
New Ranges And Older Conversions
Today's Bailey, Elddis and Auto-Trail models sit alongside older Auto-Sleepers and Autocruise Boxers. Clean Green Cars introduces you to UK providers offering motorhome cover, and one short form brings their quotes for your Boxer together.
Peugeot Motorhome Insurance At A Glance
- Peugeot Specifics - The Boxer is built at the Sevel plant alongside the Fiat Ducato and Citroën Jumper, from the shared X250 design. Peugeot has sold three Boxer generations since 1994, the third from 2006, with updated models in 2014 and 2024.
- Current UK Boxer Motorhomes - the Bailey Autograph, the Elddis Whirlwind GT, GTS and GTV, and the Auto-Trail Adventure are built on a Boxer. Auto-Sleepers used it in its 2023 and earlier ranges, and its current range is on Fiat, Mercedes and Ford.
- Insurance Is A Legal Requirement - by law, any Boxer-based motorhome driven on a road or other public place needs at least third party cover.
- Weights Run From 3,499kg To 4,500kg - the Whirlwind GT and GTV drive on a car licence, while a 3,650kg or 4,400kg Adventure and heavier Autograph models need C1.
- Peugeot Base, Peugeot Support - on a new Boxer motorhome, the base vehicle warranty and roadside help come through Peugeot rather than Fiat, so keep the Peugeot paperwork with your motorhome documents.
- Compare Quotes - see quotes from UK insurance providers for your Boxer-based motorhome, licence, postcode and storage. The motorhome insurance guide covers the rules for every make.

Is Insurance Required For A Peugeot Motorhome?
Yes. By law, a Boxer-based motorhome needs at least third party insurance before it's driven on a road or other public place. GOV.UK says driving uninsured can mean a £300 fixed penalty and 6 penalty points (an IN10 endorsement), and police can seize the motorhome.
- Public Road Use Needs Insurance - the rule is the same for a 3,499kg Whirlwind GT and a 4,400kg Adventure. If the case goes to court, the fine has no upper limit and you could be disqualified.
- SORN Over The Winter - a Boxer motorhome kept off the road and declared SORN doesn't legally need insurance, though laid-up cover for fire and theft still protects it. GOV.UK says an uninsured vehicle that isn't SORN can mean a £100 keeper fine, or up to £1,000 in court.
- Older Boxer Conversions Count Too - a used Auto-Sleepers or Autocruise campervan on a Boxer needs the same motor cover as a new Autograph. Quote the converter, model and year from the V5C.
- Read The Conditions - some providers set rules on storage, security or habitation checks. Read them on each quote, as missing one can affect a claim.
Peugeot Motorhome Licence Requirements
Habitation Cover For A Boxer Motorhome
The living area built on a Boxer is where most of the value sits. Habitation checks aren't a legal requirement, but most manufacturers recommend one a year and some policies need one. These are the three areas that matter most.
Coachbuilt Body And Seals
Bailey, Elddis and Auto-Trail each build their own living area on the Boxer cab. Sudden water damage may be covered, but slow damp through tired seals is often excluded, so keep a record of every habitation check.
Heating, Gas And Electrics
The heater, cooker, fridge and 12V and 230V systems usually come under habitation cover. There's no legal gas check for private use, but an Approved Workshop Scheme (AWS) habitation check includes the gas system.
Contents And Payload
Each policy sets a contents limit, so name higher-value items such as e-bikes. Payload matters too, as Bailey lists the Autograph at between 274kg and 1,274kg depending on the model and plate.
Cover Levels For A Boxer Motorhome
Pick third party only and a Boxer motorhome destroyed by fire pays you nothing for the cab or the living area. Here's what each cover level usually takes in.
| Feature | Comprehensive | Third Party, Fire & Theft | Third Party Only |
|---|---|---|---|
| Liability to third parties (legal minimum) | Yes | Yes | Yes |
| Fire and theft of your Boxer motorhome | Yes | Yes | No |
| Accidental damage to the Boxer cab and coachbuilt body | Yes | No | No |
| Habitation contents and personal belongings | Often included up to a limit | Provider-dependent | No |
| Awning, bike rack and external accessories | Often included up to a limit | Provider-dependent | No |
| Agreed value on a Boxer motorhome | Often available | Provider-dependent | No |
| EU touring cover (third-party level) | Yes | Yes | Yes |
| Motorhome breakdown and recovery | Often add-on | Add-on | Add-on |
| Personal accident benefit for the driver | Typically yes | Provider-dependent | No |
| Uninsured driver promise if an uninsured driver hits you | Often included | Provider-dependent | No |
Features, benefits and terms vary between insurance providers, so read each policy wording before you buy.
Cover Tip: Comprehensive is the level that pays for accidental damage to your own Boxer motorhome, cab and body alike. Adding an agreed value fixes the insured figure when the policy starts, which can help on a well-specified Autograph or a newer Adventure. Read the habitation, awning and contents sections too.
What May Not Be Covered
Drive a heavy Boxer on the wrong licence or miss a stated condition, and a claim may be refused. Here's what a standard Peugeot motorhome policy usually leaves out.
Standard Exclusions
- Heavy Boxer On A Car Licence - A 4,400kg Adventure or an Autograph above 3,500kg needs C1 or pre-1997 rights. Driving one on category B alone means you are not licensed, and your insurer can refuse the claim. Check the V5C weight against your licence online.
- Weight Upgrades Not Recorded - Auto-Trail offers an upgrade from 3,500kg to 3,650kg before registration. Any change to the plated weight has to go on the V5C, can move you into C1, and needs to be on your quote too.
- Missed Habitation Check Condition - If your policy makes a habitation check a condition, a damp or appliance claim may be refused when it's overdue. Keep each certificate with your policy documents.
Important Limitations
- Undeclared Extras - Solar panels, lithium batteries, bike racks and new awnings need declaring when you quote. Leaving them off may invalidate cover, and it leaves them out of the insured value.
- Hire And Reward Use - A private policy doesn't cover renting your Boxer motorhome to others or carrying paying passengers. Hire use needs specialist cover, and the gas safety rules apply once it's hired out.
- Tours Beyond The European Day Limit - Many policies cap full cover abroad at a set number of days each year. Past that, cover may drop back to the legal third party minimum, so check the limit before a long trip.
Extras For Boxer Owners
Once the Peugeot roadside cover on a new Boxer runs out, a car breakdown plan may not stretch to recovering a heavy motorhome. These optional extras may be worth adding to a Peugeot motorhome policy.
Recovery built for motorhomes, at home and abroad. Useful once Peugeot Roadside Assistance on a new Boxer ends, and on heavier plates such as a 4,400kg Adventure or a 4,500kg Autograph.
Stretches the number of days your full cover runs outside the UK each year. Every UK policy already includes the legal minimum third party cover in the EU.
Fixes what your Boxer motorhome is insured for at the start of the policy, rather than working out a market value after a total loss. It suits a well-specified Autograph or a newer Whirlwind.
May help you recover losses you're not insured for, such as your excess or injury costs, after an accident that wasn't your fault, at home or abroad.
What Affects A Peugeot Motorhome Quote?
Which Boxer range you own, what it's plated at and where it's stored all move the price. These are the factors that tend to count most.
| Key Factor | Impact on your price |
|---|---|
| Range and value | A Bailey Autograph on an AL-KO chassis, an Elddis Whirlwind and an Auto-Trail Adventure carry different values and repair costs, and the insured value is a big part of the price. |
| Plated weight | Boxer motorhomes run from 3,499kg to 4,500kg. Above 3,500kg you need C1 and the motorhome is taxed as Private HGV, which GOV.UK sets at £177 a year. |
| Engine and gearbox | Current Boxers use 2.2 BlueHDi engines at 140hp or 180hp, with an 8-speed automatic available. 2014-era Boxers had HDi engines from 110hp to 180hp, and power and spec may feature in the price. |
| Age and generation | Boxers have been sold since 1994, with the current design dating from 2006 and updated in 2014 and 2024. A newer base usually costs more to repair or replace. |
| Driver age and licence history | Drivers with a long clean record often see lower prices, while younger drivers, those with claims or those without C1 on a heavier plate may pay more. |
| Overnight storage | A CaSSOA-accredited site, a locked driveway and on-street parking each carry a different theft risk, and providers may price them differently. |
| Annual mileage | Motorhomes tend to cover fewer miles than a daily car. Declare a realistic figure, as understating it may cause problems at claim time. |
| Home postcode | Local theft and weather risks feed into the price, so the same Boxer motorhome can be quoted differently from one area to the next. |
| Security devices fitted | Trackers, alarms and wheel clamps may help lower the price, and some providers set security conditions for higher-value motorhomes. |
| Cover tier and excess | Comprehensive with an agreed value usually costs more than third party fire and theft. A higher voluntary excess may lower the price, but only if you could afford to pay it. |
The quotes you get will depend on your own details.
Price Insight: The same Boxer cab sits under an AL-KO-chassis Bailey Autograph and an Auto-Trail Adventure, so insured values can differ widely. Heavier plates also bring extra licence questions. Secure storage and accurate details tend to help whichever Boxer you own.

Ways To Help Reduce Your Premium
Let a Boxer motorhome policy roll over without comparing and the renewal price may creep up. The tips below may help keep that in check.
Quote The Exact Range And Plate
Give the model, year and plated weight from the V5C, such as an Adventure 74 at 3,650kg. Accurate details help providers price the motorhome you actually own.
Store At An Accredited Site
Keep your Boxer at a CaSSOA Silver, Gold or Platinum site where you can, and name the site on the quote form. Some insurers discount accredited storage.
Keep Habitation Checks Up To Date
Book an AWS habitation check each year and keep the certificate. Some policies require one, and it helps show the body's condition if you claim.
Add Approved Security
Fit an approved alarm, immobiliser or tracker and list it when you quote. Some providers ask for specific devices on higher-value motorhomes such as the Autograph.
Give An Honest Mileage
Work out the miles your Boxer really covers in a year. A realistic low figure usually prices better than a guess, while an understated one may cause problems later.
Pay Annually If You Can
Pay for the year in one go if you can. Monthly payments usually carry interest (the APR), which adds to the total cost of your Boxer cover.
Storage Tip: CaSSOA is the UK accreditation scheme for secure caravan and motorhome storage sites, graded Silver, Gold or Platinum, and some insurers discount accredited storage. Add a full habitation record and an honest mileage, and your Boxer quote may come down.

Set A Start Date
Choose when you want cover to start. The provider issues your certificate and documents once payment is made.
What Our Expert Says
The Boxer is built at Sevel alongside the Fiat Ducato, from the shared X250 design, but in the UK it's the minority base. The NCC's 2026 approved list has 13 Peugeot rows against about 180 Fiat. The current UK users are the Bailey Autograph, the Elddis Whirlwind and the Auto-Trail Adventure.
Weight is where Boxer owners get caught out. An Elddis Whirlwind GT is plated at 3,499kg, but an Auto-Trail Adventure can be 3,650kg or 4,400kg and a Bailey Autograph goes up to 4,500kg. If you passed your car test on or after 1 January 1997, check you have C1 before you drive one of the heavier plates, because without it you're not licensed and a claim can be refused.
The other thing to know is that the base vehicle support is Peugeot's, not Fiat's. Auto-Trail's 2027 price list gives a 2-year Peugeot base warranty with 1 year of Peugeot Roadside Assistance, so once that ends, check your own breakdown cover can recover a motorhome of your weight.

Peugeot Boxer Motorhome Questions
Which UK Motorhomes Are Built On A Peugeot Boxer?
Three current ranges. Bailey builds the Autograph on a Boxer cab with an AL-KO chassis, Elddis uses it for the Whirlwind GT and GTS motorhomes and the GTV campervan, and Auto-Trail offers the Adventure on it. Auto-Sleepers and Swift's Autocruise van conversions used the Boxer in the past, so older Boxer models turn up used too.
Is A Peugeot Boxer Motorhome The Same As A Fiat Ducato One?
Not quite. Both come from the X250 design and are built at the same Sevel plant, but the Boxer uses Peugeot's HDi and BlueHDi engines, and its base warranty and roadside help come through Peugeot. Insure it as the Peugeot shown on your V5C, with the coachbuilder and model.
Does Upgrading A Boxer To 3,650kg Affect My Insurance?
It can. Auto-Trail offers a weight upgrade from 3,500kg to 3,650kg before registration, and it's needed for the six-belt dinette option. Above 3,500kg you need C1, and the motorhome is taxed as Private HGV. Tell your insurer the plated weight shown on the V5C.
Does Peugeot Roadside Assistance Cover My Motorhome For Good?
No. Auto-Trail's 2027 price list gives a 2-year Peugeot base warranty from registration and 1 year of Peugeot Roadside Assistance. After that, or on an older Boxer, you'll need your own breakdown cover, so check any plan you buy can recover a motorhome of your weight.
Can I Still Insure A Boxer-Based Auto-Sleepers?
Yes. Auto-Sleepers built campervans on the Boxer, including its 2023 range, with 165bhp BlueHDi engines, and its current range is on Fiat, Mercedes and Ford. Quote the exact model and year. On a 2023 model, check whether any of the Peugeot 3-year warranty offered through UK Peugeot dealers is left.
How Much Payload Does A Boxer Motorhome Have?
It varies a lot. Bailey lists the Autograph's payload at 274kg to 1,274kg across its 3,500kg to 4,500kg plates. Payload is the gross vehicle weight minus the unladen weight, so leave room for passengers, luggage and full water tanks. Going over a plated weight counts as overloading.
Does A Heavy Boxer Motorhome Need An HGV MOT?
No. Motorhomes take a class 4 MOT whatever their weight, so a 4,400kg Adventure or 4,500kg Autograph doesn't go through the HGV test. The first MOT is due at 3 years. Speed limits depend on unladen weight, with lower limits above 3.05 tonnes unladen.
What Happens After I Submit My Details?
Clean Green Cars introduces you to UK insurance providers or regulated brokers that offer cover for Boxer-based motorhomes, matched to your range, plated weight, licence, postcode and storage. You can then line up cover, price and extras before you choose.
