Why Compare VW Motorhome Insurance?

Three Kinds Of VW Camper

A factory California, a converter's Transporter and a Crafter coachbuilt are built and valued differently. Providers may rate each one in its own way, so comparing shows the spread.

Weight Splits The Range

Californias and 3.5-tonne Grand Californias fit a car licence, while 3.88-tonne models need C1. Providers may ask different questions for each.

How You Use It Matters

A camper that's also your main car may be rated differently from a holiday-only one. Clean Green Cars introduces you to UK providers offering motorhome cover, so one short form brings quotes for your VW together.

VW Motorhome Insurance At A Glance

  • VW Specifics - Volkswagen builds two factory campers, the California and the Grand California, and its Transporter and Crafter vans are also used by converters and coachbuilders. Each type is built and valued differently, so say which one yours is.
  • California On The Multivan - the current California is built on the long Multivan's MQB platform, in Beach Camper, Coast and Ocean trims, with 2WD or 4MOTION and diesel, petrol or plug-in hybrid power. When checked in October 2026, VW said it was available from existing stock only.
  • California 6.1 On The T6.1 - the previous generation was a Transporter T6.1, sold as the Beach Camper, Beach Tour, Coast and Ocean, with a 204PS 4MOTION Ocean at the top of the range.
  • Grand California On The Crafter - VW's larger factory motorhome comes as the 600 or 680, both with a fixed rear bed. The 600 is plated at 3.5 or 3.88 tonnes, the 680 at 3.88 tonnes only.
  • Converters And Coachbuilders - VW's Motorhome Qualification scheme lists converters including Bilbo's, Jerba Campervans, Hillside Leisure, Rolling Homes Campers and CJL Leisure. Knaus, Dethleffs and Adria have all built motorhomes on the Crafter.
  • Compare Quotes - see UK insurance providers quoting for your California, converted VW or Crafter coachbuilt, its weight and storage. General motorhome rules, from MOT to tax, sit on the motorhome insurance hub.

Is Insurance Required For A VW Motorhome?

Yes. A California, Grand California or converted Transporter needs at least third party insurance to be driven on a road or other public place. The police can give a £300 fixed penalty and 6 penalty points (an IN10 endorsement) for driving uninsured, and can seize the camper. In court the fine is unlimited and a driving ban is possible.

  • Factory Or Converted, Same Law - the legal minimum is the same whether VW built the camper or a converter did. What changes is how a provider values and rates it.
  • A Camper That's Also Your Car - if your California is your main car too, say so when you quote. Commuting and leisure-only use may be rated differently, and the policy needs to cover both.
  • Off The Road And SORN - a VW camper kept off the road and declared SORN doesn't need insurance by law. Fire and theft cover for a laid-up camper is still worth having while it's off the road.
  • Body Type On A Conversion - DVLA says the V5C body type describes how the vehicle looks and doesn't set the insurance category. A converted Transporter can be used as a camper as long as it has the required internal features.

VW Motorhome Licence Requirements

The licence you need follows the maximum authorised mass (MAM, the most the vehicle may weigh fully loaded) on the V5C. California models and the 3.5-tonne Grand California fit a car licence, but the 3.88-tonne versions and some Crafter coachbuilts don't.

  • Category B Up To 3,500kg - a car licence covers a petrol, diesel or hybrid motorhome up to 3,500kg MAM. The California eHybrid counts as a hybrid, so the higher 4,250kg limit for fully electric vehicles doesn't apply to it.
  • C1 For 3.88-Tonne Models - VW says its 3.88-tonne Grand California models need a licence with C1, which covers 3,500kg to 7,500kg. That means every 680 and some 600s. A Knaus SKY TI VW plated above 3,500kg needs C1 too.
  • Passed Before 1997 - a car licence gained before 1 January 1997 usually includes C1 up to 7,500kg. Look up your licence record online before buying a 3.88-tonne model.
  • Adding C1 After 1997 - start with a D4 medical and a provisional licence, then pass the theory, off-road (3a) and on-road (3b) tests. Leisure use alone doesn't call for a Driver CPC.
  • Keeping C1 Later On - pre-1997 C1 lasts until your licence expires, usually at 70, then you renew it by post and meet the higher lorry medical standard. Test-passed C1 holders renew every 5 years from 45, each time with a D4 medical, and every year once they reach 65.

Habitation Cover For A VW Camper

Whether Volkswagen or a converter fitted out your camper, the kitchen, beds and electrics need cover alongside the vehicle itself. A habitation check isn't a legal requirement, but most manufacturers advise one a year, and some warranties and policies need one. These are the three areas to look at.

Roof, Windows And Seals

Water can find its way in around roof seals, windows and any holes cut for vents or solar panels. If your policy makes a habitation check a condition, keep each dated certificate with your documents.

Kitchen, Heater And Power

The cooker, fridge, heater and leisure battery are usually covered under habitation rather than motor. The gas safety regulations don't apply to private use, but an Approved Workshop Scheme check includes the gas and electrics.

Awning, Bikes And Belongings

An awning, a bike rack and the kit you pack usually sit under the habitation or contents section. Every policy sets a contents limit, so check it and list valuable items such as e-bikes separately.

VW Camper And Motorhome Cover Levels

Settle for third party only and a stolen California or Grand California leaves you with nothing for the camper itself. Here's what each level usually includes.

Breakdown and recovery for campersOften an add-onAdd-onAdd-on

Every provider sets its own features, limits and conditions, so check the policy wording before you commit.

Cover Tip: Whichever VW you own, check how the policy values it. A factory camper, a converter's camper and a Crafter coachbuilt can each be valued differently, and agreed value fixes the payout figure before anything happens. Read how the awning, roof accessories, contents and habitation sections are worded too.

What A VW Motorhome Policy May Not Cover

A detail left off the form, such as a converter's name or a 3.88-tonne plate, can leave a VW claim unpaid. Look out for these gaps in a standard camper policy.

Standard Exclusions

  • A 3.88-Tonne Model Without C1 - VW says its 3.88-tonne Grand California models need C1. Drive one on a car licence alone, without C1 or pre-1997 rights, and you're not licensed for it, so your insurer can refuse the claim.
  • A Conversion Quoted As Factory - A converter's camper and a VW-built California are different vehicles to an insurer. Describe the wrong one and a claim may be reduced or refused, so name the converter and the base van.
  • Undeclared Extras And Changes - Roof bars, bike racks, solar panels, extra batteries and an aftermarket awning all change the risk and the value. List them when you quote, as an undeclared change may invalidate cover.

Important Limitations

  • Hiring It Out - Renting your camper to paying holidaymakers isn't covered by a private policy. Hire use needs specialist cover, and the gas safety regulations apply to a camper hired out as a business.
  • Use You Didn't Mention - If the camper is also your main car or is used for work, a policy set up for leisure only may not cover those trips. Say how you really use it when you quote.
  • Touring Past The Day Limit - Full cover abroad often comes with a yearly day limit. Past it, you may have only the legal minimum third party cover, so check the wording before a long trip and arrange extra days if needed.

Extras For VW Camper Owners

A long trip in a California or Grand California can go wrong a long way from home. These optional extras can be added to a VW motorhome policy.

Adds more days of full cover abroad than the standard policy. Useful if your VW spends weeks on the continent rather than weekends in the UK.

Roadside help and recovery that can carry a Grand California or Crafter coachbuilt as well as a smaller camper, and get you and your passengers home.

Fixes the payout figure when the policy starts. Helpful on a factory camper or a well-specified conversion, where a market valuation after a loss may not reflect the spec.

Covers laptops, cameras and bikes that may push past the standard contents limit, whether they're in the camper or with you on a day out. Check the single-item limit too, as one e-bike can go over it on its own.

What Affects A VW Motorhome Quote?

Which VW you own, who built the living area, its weight and where it's kept tend to move the price most. Here's how each one can play out on a VW.

Key FactorImpact on your price
Factory camper or conversionA VW-built California or Grand California, a converter's camper and a coachbuilt on a Crafter may each be rated differently. Say which yours is and who built it.
Model, trim and valueBeach Camper, Coast and Ocean differ in seats and kit, and a Grand California 680 differs from a 600. Declare a value that reflects the trim and any extras.
Plated weightThe 3.88-tonne Grand California models need C1, and over 3,500kg a motorhome is taxed as Private HGV (TC10). Providers may ask about your entitlement.
Drive and power4MOTION all-wheel drive is offered on the current California, the Grand California 680 and the T6.1 Ocean 204PS, and the California also comes as a plug-in hybrid. Declare the drive and power type.
Driver age and recordDrivers with a long, clean record usually see lower prices. Younger drivers may be quoted more, and some providers set their own age limits for campers.
How you use itA camper also used for commuting or the school run may be rated differently from one kept for holidays and weekends away. Say how you use it.
Overnight storageA garage, a locked driveway or a CaSSOA-accredited site may price lower than street parking, and each provider rates storage in its own way.
Annual mileageA realistic figure for the miles you'll cover keeps the quote accurate. A figure that's too low can cause problems if you claim.
Security fittedA tracker, an alarm and a steering or pedal lock may help the quote, and some policies make approved security a condition on higher-value campers.
Who converted itVW says its Motorhome Qualification scheme sets conversion standards for the converters it lists. Naming the converter tells a provider who built the living area and to what standard.

The quotes you see will depend on your own details.

Price Insight: A California, a converter's Transporter and a Crafter coachbuilt can price quite differently, even at similar ages, because the build, value and weight differ. Give the exact model, trim, converter or coachbuilder, and drive type when you quote, so each provider rates the VW you actually own.

Ways To Help Reduce Your VW Camper Premium

Letting a VW camper policy roll over without a fresh look can leave you paying more than you need to. The tips below may help lower the price.

1

Name The Exact Model And Trim

Quote California Beach Camper, Coast or Ocean, or Grand California 600 or 680, rather than just VW camper. The exact model helps each provider price the vehicle you own.

2

Give The Converter's Name

Name the converter for a third-party build and keep the build paperwork. It shows who fitted the living area and what it's worth.

3

Lock It Up And Track It

Fit a tracker and a visible steering or pedal lock, and list both on the form. Security may help the quote, and some policies require it on higher-value campers.

4

Store It Off The Street

Keep it on a driveway or at a CaSSOA-accredited site where you can, and say so. CaSSOA's own site says insurers recognise the scheme, with discounts on offer.

5

Describe How You Use It

Tell the provider whether the camper is also your main car, including any commuting. Accurate use details avoid problems if you ever need to claim.

6

Pay Annually If You Can

Pay the full year upfront if you can afford it. Monthly instalments usually add interest (the APR), which raises the total cost.

Saving Tip: Have the V5C, the model and trim, and any converter paperwork to hand when you quote. Accurate details on weight, use and storage give each provider a clear picture, and some insurers give a discount for CaSSOA-accredited storage.

How To Compare VW Motorhome Quotes

Comparing VW motorhome insurance from UK insurance providers takes a few minutes. Get started above.

1

Share Your Details

Enter the model, trim, year, converter or coachbuilder, value and your postcode. It takes a few minutes.

2

Confirm Weight And Use

Check the MAM on the V5C against your licence, especially on a 3.88-tonne Grand California, and say whether the camper is also your main car.

3

Compare Cover Levels

Put third party only, third party fire and theft and comprehensive side by side, then read the habitation, awning and European terms.

4

Choose Any Extras

Decide on European touring cover, camper breakdown, agreed value or gadget cover, based on how you use your VW.

5

Pick A Start Date

Choose when you want cover to begin. After payment, the provider sends out your certificate and policy documents.

What Our Expert Says

Work out which kind of VW motorhome you own first, because providers ask different questions about each. A California or Grand California is built and sold by Volkswagen. A camper from a converter such as Bilbo's, Jerba or Hillside Leisure is a third-party conversion of a VW van. A Knaus, Dethleffs or Adria on a Crafter is a coachbuilder's motorhome on a VW base.

Then check the generation. The current California is built on the long Multivan, not the Transporter, while the California 6.1 before it was a Transporter T6.1. Quote the exact model and trim, such as Beach Camper, Coast or Ocean, as the seats, beds and kit differ.

On a Grand California, read the weight before you assume a car licence will do. The 600 comes at 3.5 or 3.88 tonnes and the 680 only at 3.88 tonnes, and VW itself says the 3.88-tonne models need C1. If you passed your car test on or after 1 January 1997, that means adding C1 before you drive one.

VW California And Camper Questions

Is A VW California A Factory Motorhome Or A Conversion?

A factory motorhome. VW builds and sells the California itself, and the current model is built on the long Multivan. A camper from a converter such as Bilbo's, Jerba or Hillside Leisure is a third-party conversion of a VW van. Tell your insurer which you have, and name the converter if it's a conversion.

Is The New California Still Based On The Transporter?

No. VW says the current California is built on the MQB platform used on the long Multivan. The previous California 6.1 was a Transporter T6.1. Give the generation and trim when you quote, as the base, seats and equipment differ between them.

Do I Need A C1 Licence For A Grand California?

Only for the 3.88-tonne models. The Grand California 600 comes at 3.5 or 3.88 tonnes, and the 680 only at 3.88 tonnes. VW says 3.88-tonne models need a licence with C1. If you passed your car test before 1 January 1997, your licence usually includes C1, so check your record online.

Can I Drive A California Ehybrid On A Car Licence?

Yes, within the usual 3,500kg limit. A car licence covers a petrol, diesel or hybrid motorhome up to 3,500kg MAM. The higher 4,250kg allowance is for fully electric or hydrogen vehicles only, so it doesn't apply to a plug-in hybrid. VW says the California eHybrid 4MOTION gives up to 53 miles (WLTP) in electric mode.

What Is The VW Motorhome Qualification Scheme?

It's VW's own list of qualified camper converters. VW says the scheme sets conversion standards, and it names qualified converters including Jerba Campervans, Hillside Leisure, Rolling Homes Campers, CJL Leisure and Bilbos. A scheme converter's camper is still a third-party conversion, so name the converter when you quote.

Which Coachbuilders Use The VW Crafter?

Several continental builders. Knaus builds the VAN TI PLUS and SKY TI VW on the Crafter, Dethleffs builds the Globebus Performance on it, and Adria's Compact Max used it on earlier stock. Knaus lists the SKY TI VW at 3,500 to 3,850kg, so check the plate against your licence.

Can I Take My VW Camper Into Europe?

Yes. Every UK policy includes the minimum third party cover for the EU, and no green card is needed there or in Switzerland, Norway and a few other countries. How much theft and damage cover you keep abroad depends on the policy, and many set a yearly day limit. Take your licence and V5C, and show a UK sticker unless your plate has the UK identifier with the Union flag, and always in Spain, Cyprus and Malta.

What Happens After I Submit My Details?

Clean Green Cars introduces you to UK insurance providers and regulated brokers offering cover for your VW camper or motorhome, based on its model, who built it, its weight and where it's kept. You can then look at the quotes side by side, comparing cover, price and extras, before making up your mind.
