Why Compare Quotes For Your Wildax Motorhome?

Same Name, Different Van

A 2020 Europa was a Renault Master, while today's is a Fiat Ducato. Providers may rate those bases differently, so comparing quotes with the right base vehicle shows the true spread for yours.

Options Add Up

Extras from the WildAx price list, such as more solar, lithium batteries and 4G Wi-Fi, add to what the van is worth. Comparing shows how each provider handles declared extras.

Lots Of Used Vans

WildAx was building 300 campervans a year in 2020, so many of its vans are likely to be on the used market now. Clean Green Cars introduces you to UK providers, so you can compare WildAx quotes from one short form.

Wildax Motorhome Insurance At A Glance

  • WildAx Specifics - WildAx builds campervans in Elland, West Yorkshire, near Halifax. It started in 2006 with two people, joined the French Rapido Group in 2017, and still launches new models, including a 5.4m Ford Transit-based van at the NEC in October 2026.
  • Campervans, Not Coachbuilts - every WildAx is a van conversion, with 2, 3 and 4 berth layouts. The current range is built on Fiat, Ford and MAN vans.
  • Current Ranges - the Aurora, Europa, Pulsar, Solaris and Constellation use a Fiat Ducato, the Equinox, Meteor and Mercury a Ford Transit, and the Altair a MAN TGE. The maker lists the Aurora, Meteor and Altair at 3,500kg.
  • Older Vans, Other Bases - earlier WildAx vans were well known as Citroën Relay conversions, with Mercedes-Benz Sprinter, Ford Transit Custom, Fiat Ducato and Renault Master versions too. The same model name can sit on a different base depending on the year.
  • Warranty On New Vans - new WildAx vans have a three year comprehensive warranty, covering the habitation space for 3 years and the base vehicle for 3 years (2 on Fiat). WildAx Warranty Plus is open to vans under 10 years old.
  • Factory Options - the price list includes a door-mounted bike rack, an extra 200W solar panel, 4G Wi-Fi and lithium battery upgrades. Each one can add value, so list any fitted to yours.

Do You Need Insurance For Your Wildax Motorhome?

Yes, whenever it's on a road or in another public place. The law asks for at least third party cover on every motorhome used there, your WildAx included. If you're caught without it, GOV.UK lists a £300 fixed penalty with 6 penalty points (recorded as an IN10), and the police have the power to seize the motorhome. In court the fine is unlimited and you could be disqualified from driving.

  • Off The Road Under SORN - a motorhome declared SORN and kept off the road doesn't need insurance by law. Laid-up cover against fire and theft is still an option while it's parked for the winter.
  • Every Journey Needs Cover - the run from the storage yard to your house, or a quick hop to the workshop for a service, is road use in the same way as a fortnight's tour.
  • No Cover And No SORN - if you're the registered keeper of an uninsured motorhome that hasn't been declared off the road, you could get a £100 fine, see it clamped or impounded, or be fined up to £1,000 in court.
  • Policy Conditions Matter Too - a provider may attach conditions on security, storage or habitation checks, and a breach can affect a claim. For the broader picture, see the motorhome insurance guide.

Which Licence Do You Need For Your Wildax?

It comes down to the maximum authorised mass (MAM), which is the heaviest the motorhome is allowed to be when fully loaded. Read the plated figure on the weight plate or the V5C, because models within one range can carry different plates.

  • Up To 3,500kg On A Car Licence - category B lets you drive a petrol, diesel or hybrid motorhome plated at up to 3,500kg MAM. An electric or hydrogen model can go up to 4,250kg on the same licence.
  • 3,500kg To 7,500kg Needs C1 - between those weights you need category C1. Over 7,500kg it's a full category C licence, but private leisure trips don't call for Driver CPC.
  • Passed Your Test Before 1997 - if you got your car licence before 1 January 1997, it usually includes C1, covering motorhomes up to 7,500kg. Your online licence record will confirm it.
  • Passed Your Test From 1997 - adding C1 means getting a D4 medical and a provisional licence first, then passing a theory test and the off-road and on-road practical tests.
  • Keeping C1 As You Get Older - test-passed C1 needs renewing every 5 years from age 45 with a D4 medical, and every year from 65. C1 that came with a pre-1997 car licence lasts only until that licence runs out, normally at 70. From then on it's renewed by post, and you have to meet the higher lorry medical standard.

Covering The Living Area Of Your Wildax

A habitation check isn't a legal requirement for a motorhome in private use. Most manufacturers still advise one a year, and some warranties and insurance policies make it a condition. Habitation cover tends to earn its keep in these three areas.

Cooking, Heating And Gas

Fixed appliances such as the hob, fridge, water heater and space heater belong to the living area, so they're normally covered under the habitation section, not the motor section. Private use falls outside the gas safety regulations, though an Approved Workshop Scheme check still looks at the gas system.

Body Seals And Damp

On any coachbuilt, rain can creep in at seams, roof lights and window frames and stay hidden for months. Damp readings taken at a yearly check give you a dated note of how sound the body was, which can back up a claim later.

Belongings, Awning And Solar

Things you pack for a trip, a wind-out awning and solar panels on the roof usually come under the contents or habitation section. Every policy has a contents limit, so look yours up and name high-value items like cameras or e-bikes separately.

Wildax Cover Levels Side By Side

With third party only, a theft of your WildAx from storage pays nothing towards the motorhome itself. The table shows what each level of cover tends to include.

FeatureComprehensiveThird Party, Fire & TheftThird Party Only
Injury or damage you cause to other people (legal minimum)YesYesYes

Motorhome breakdown and recoveryOften an add-onAdd-onAdd-on
Uninsured driver promise (excess returned if not at fault)Often includedProvider-dependentNo

Features, limits and conditions vary from one provider to the next, so read the policy wording before you buy.

Cover Note: On a less common motorhome, an agreed value set at the start of a comprehensive policy can make a total loss easier to settle, because the payout is fixed in advance. Check too how the awning, solar panels, contents and habitation section are treated, and what happens if a habitation check is missed.

Common Exclusions To Watch For

A single clause you missed can mean your WildAx claim isn't paid. Here's what standard motorhome policies often leave out.

Standard Exclusions

  • Too Heavy For Your Licence - Above 3,500kg, a petrol or diesel motorhome needs C1 or pre-1997 entitlement. On a car licence alone you aren't licensed to drive it, and the insurer can refuse a claim on that basis. Check the V5C weight against your online licence record.
  • Letting A Required Habitation Check Lapse - Where a policy makes a regular habitation check a condition, missing one may give the insurer grounds to decline a claim for damp, gas or appliance damage. File every dated certificate with your policy papers so it's ready if asked.
  • Storing It Somewhere Else - If your policy names a storage site or a security standard, keeping the motorhome somewhere less secure, even briefly, may put a theft or vandalism claim at risk. Let your insurer know before it moves.

Important Limitations

  • Upgrades Left Off The Quote - Solar panels, lithium batteries, a satellite dish, a bike rack, a new awning or a changed layout all alter the value and the risk. Declare each one when you quote, as anything missing may be excluded or cut the payout after a claim.
  • Renting It Out Or Using It For Pay - Hiring your WildAx out, or carrying paying passengers or goods, falls outside a private motorhome policy. That calls for specialist hire cover, and a motorhome hired out by a business is also subject to the gas safety regulations.
  • Overstaying The Foreign Day Limit - Many policies cap the days of full cover you get abroad each year. Go past the cap on a trip and you may be left with just the legal minimum third party cover. Find the figure in your policy wording before a long tour, and buy extra days ahead of time if needed.

Extras You Can Add To Your Wildax Policy

Recovering a broken-down motorhome a long way from home can be costly without the right cover. These optional extras may be worth considering for your WildAx.

Stretches full cover abroad past the standard number of days in the policy. Useful if your WildAx spends weeks on the continent, rather than touring mostly on UK sites.

Roadside assistance and recovery using vehicles that can take a long, heavy coachbuilt. A breakdown service aimed at cars may lack the equipment to move a motorhome of that size.

The phones, tablets, laptops, drones and cameras you take away can be worth more than the contents limit. Gadget cover protects portable electronics carried in the motorhome, on the drive or on tour.

May help you recover costs the policy won't pay, such as your excess or injury costs, after a UK or overseas accident that wasn't your fault.

What Affects The Cost Of Wildax Cover?

The price of WildAx cover moves with the motorhome's value, where it's kept overnight and the miles it does each year. Here are the main factors.

Key FactorImpact on your price
WildAx model, base and optionsA new WildAx on a MAN TGE, Transit or Ducato carries a new-van value, and fitted options add to it. An older Relay-based van is valued as a used campervan, and providers may rate the two quite differently.
Your age and driving historyA long, clean driving record usually helps the price. Younger drivers, and anyone without experience of a vehicle this big, may be quoted more, and some providers have their own age limits.
Home postcodeAreas with more vehicle theft and more claims usually cost more to insure than quieter ones, even with the same motorhome and driver.
Where it's storedA storage site graded Silver, Gold or Platinum by CaSSOA may help the price. A home drive and a roadside space carry different risks, and providers each rate them differently.
Annual mileageMost motorhomes are parked far more than they're driven. Giving a realistic mileage keeps the quote fair and avoids problems at claim time.
Weight on the plateA petrol or diesel motorhome plated over 3,500kg needs C1 and is taxed as a Private HGV (TC10). Some providers price heavier motorhomes differently from those at 3,500kg or under.
Whether it's an importA motorhome from abroad must be approved and registered with DVLA before it can be used on UK roads. Let your insurer know it's an import, since some providers may price it differently.
Habitation check historyRecent dated habitation checks can back up your quote. If a policy makes regular checks a condition, a gap may affect the price or a future claim.
Security devicesA tracker, an alarm or a wheel clamp makes the motorhome harder to steal. Above a set value, some providers make approved devices a condition of cover.
No-claims historyYears without a claim usually lower the price. Ask when you quote whether a no-claims record built on a car or other vehicle will count, as providers vary.
Cover level and valuationAgreed value on a comprehensive policy may cost more than market value cover. The trade-off is a payout fixed at the start, rather than debated after a write-off.

The quotes you see will depend on your own details and your motorhome.

Pricing Note: Each provider weighs value, storage, security and driving history in its own way, so the same motorhome can draw quite different prices. Setting several quotes side by side, instead of letting the policy renew automatically, shows how wide the gap is for your WildAx.

Steps That May Help Reduce Your Wildax Premium

An automatic renewal on your WildAx policy, with no fresh comparison, can mean paying more than necessary. These steps may help bring the cost down.

1

List Every Factory Option

Name the bike rack, extra solar panel, 4G Wi-Fi or lithium battery upgrade fitted to your WildAx when you quote. Declared extras can then be included in the insured value.

2

Fit A Tracker And Keep Paying For It

Keep a tracker running with an active subscription all year. It may help the price on a higher-value motorhome, and some providers insist on one above a certain value.

3

Keep A Yearly Habitation Record

Have the habitation check done every year at an Approved Workshop Scheme workshop and file the certificate. It's a dated record of condition and may satisfy a policy or warranty condition as well.

4

Give A Realistic Mileage

Add up the likely miles from a year of tours and weekends away. Too low a figure can cause problems at claim time, while an accurate low figure may help the price.

5

Ask About Agreed Value

Check which providers offer agreed value. It may cost a little more, but the payout is settled when the policy starts, so there's no dispute over the motorhome's worth after a write-off.

6

Pay Annually If You Can

Pay for the year in one go if that's affordable. Spreading it monthly usually adds interest (shown as APR), which raises the total cost over the year.

Cost Tip: Some insurers offer a discount for CaSSOA-accredited storage, and many look for proof that a motorhome is cared for and hard to steal. A tracker, an accredited storage site and a dated record of habitation checks all help show that, as do honest mileage and a clean licence.

How To Compare Wildax Quotes

It takes just a few minutes to compare WildAx motorhome insurance from UK insurance providers. Get started above.

1

Add Your Details

Enter your WildAx model, year, value, expected yearly mileage and postcode. It only takes a few minutes.

2

Match Licence To Weight

List your licence categories and check them against the plated weight on the V5C, so the quote fits what you're allowed to drive.

3

Compare Cover Levels

Put third party only, third party fire and theft and comprehensive side by side, then check the habitation, awning and Europe terms.

4

Pick Your Extras

Think about whether European cover, motorhome breakdown, gadget cover or legal expenses suit how you use your WildAx.

5

Set The Start Date

Tell the provider which day cover should begin. As soon as it's paid for, the certificate and policy papers are sent to you.

What Our Expert Says

With a WildAx, the model name doesn't tell the whole story. In 2020 the Aurora, Constellation and Pulsar were Citroën Relay conversions and the Europa was a Renault Master, yet today all four sit on a Fiat Ducato. Check the V5C for the base vehicle and give that on the quote, not just the model name.

If you're buying a used WildAx that's under 10 years old, ask WildAx whether you can take out Warranty Plus, which it offers to new buyers and existing customers. A warranty isn't insurance, but the dated servicing you keep up for it also shows a provider how the van has been looked after.

Options are the other thing to get right. A door-mounted bike rack, an extra solar panel or a lithium battery upgrade all add to the van's value. List each one when you quote, so the insured value reflects the van you actually own rather than a base model.

Wildax Motorhome Insurance FAQs

What Base Vehicle Does A Wildax Use?

It depends on the model and year. Current WildAx vans use a Fiat Ducato (Aurora, Europa, Pulsar, Solaris and Constellation), a Ford Transit (Equinox, Meteor and Mercury) or a MAN TGE (Altair). Older vans were mostly Citroën Relay conversions, with Sprinter, Transit Custom, Ducato and Renault Master versions too. Quote the base shown on your V5C.

Can I Drive A Wildax On A Car Licence?

Yes, for the current range. The maker lists the Aurora, Meteor and Altair at an MTPLM (the most the van can weigh fully loaded) of 3,500kg, which is within a category B car licence. For an older WildAx, go by the weight on its plate or V5C rather than the model name.

Is There A Warranty On A Used Wildax?

It depends on the van's age. The standard three year comprehensive warranty is for new vehicles, so ask the seller what's left on a used van. WildAx Warranty Plus is open to existing customers with vans under 10 years old. Neither replaces motorhome insurance, which you need before you drive it away.

Does My Wildax Insurance Work Abroad In The EU?

Yes, to the legal minimum at least. All UK policies carry third party cover for the EU, and you don't need a green card there or in places such as Switzerland, Norway and Iceland. Whether theft and damage are covered abroad depends on the policy, which often caps the days each year. Carry your licence, V5C and insurance details. A UK sticker is needed in Spain, Cyprus and Malta, and anywhere else if your plate doesn't show the UK identifier with the Union flag.

Will Keeping My Wildax At A Secure Site Lower The Price?

It can. Storage is priced on theft risk, so an accredited site may be rated more favourably than a driveway or street parking. CaSSOA is the UK accreditation scheme for secure caravan and motorhome storage, and it grades sites Silver, Gold or Platinum after a survey every 3 to 5 years. Some insurers discount accredited storage, so give the site's details accurately when you quote.

Can I Insure My Wildax If It's An Import?

Yes, after the paperwork. First comes vehicle approval, usually through the GB conversion IVA scheme for a motorhome approved and registered in the EU, then DVLA registration and tax. It must be insured before any UK road use, including the trip to a pre-booked MOT or approval test. Tell your insurer it's imported and whether it's left-hand drive.

Does A Heavy Wildax Count As An HGV?

Not for the MOT. Every motorhome takes a class 4 MOT regardless of weight (class 5 if it has 13 or more passenger seats), first due at 3 years, so it never goes for the HGV annual test. Tax is different, moving from Private/Light Goods to Private HGV above 3,500kg. Speed limits follow unladen weight, with the line at 3.05 tonnes, and heavier motorhomes are limited to 50mph on single carriageways and 60mph on dual carriageways.

What Happens Once I've Sent My Details?

Clean Green Cars uses details such as your licence, postcode and storage to introduce you to UK insurance providers and regulated brokers offering cover for your WildAx. From there you can compare prices, cover levels and extras, then decide whether to take out a policy.
