Why Compare Renault Motorhome Insurance?

No Single Typical Renault

A Renault camper could be a Trafic conversion, a Master van, an older coachbuilt or an import from Europe. Providers may rate each of these differently, so prices for the same driver can vary widely.

Fuel Changes The Licence

A diesel Master at 4,000kg needs C1, while an electric one up to 4,250kg can go on a car licence. Comparing with the right details shows which providers are comfortable with your vehicle and licence.

Converter Records Count

A Renault-approved conversion with a warranty, or an older build with a full history, gives providers more to go on. Through one short form, Clean Green Cars introduces you to UK insurance providers offering cover for Renault campers.

Renault Motorhome Insurance At A Glance

  • Renault Specifics - the fourth-generation Master comes with front or rear-wheel drive, as a diesel or an electric, at 3,500 or 4,000kg gross in the UK. The smaller Trafic is also converted into campervans in the UK.
  • UK Trafic Conversions - Escape Campers converts the Trafic in the UK and describes itself as an officially Renault-approved converter. Its Crusader comes with a 3-year conversion warranty.
  • No Current UK Coachbuilt Range - when checked in October 2026, the big UK coachbuilders' current ranges used other bases, so a Master coachbuilt here is usually an older model, an import or a van conversion.
  • Older Master Motorhomes - Lunar launched its Roadstar and Telstar low-profiles on the Master in 2016, built them in Preston and went into administration in 2019. WildAx's 2020 Europa campervan was also a Master conversion.
  • Not Sold New In The UK - as at October 2026, Renault's own Trafic SpaceNomad camper had launched in France, Belgium and Switzerland, and the Ahorn motorhome range on the new Master was starting in Germany, with no UK launch found. Either would arrive here as an import.
  • Compare Quotes - see quotes from UK insurance providers for your Renault-based camper, licence and storage. The motorhome insurance hub covers the wider picture.

Is Insurance Required For A Renault Motorhome?

Yes. A Renault motorhome or campervan needs at least third party insurance by law whenever it's driven on a road or other public place. That includes an import on its way to a pre-booked MOT or approval test, so arrange cover before it moves.

  • Penalties For Driving Uninsured - GOV.UK says the police can issue a £300 fixed penalty and 6 points (an IN10 endorsement), and can seize the vehicle. In court the fine is unlimited and you could be disqualified.
  • Imports Go In Order - an imported Master or Trafic camper needs vehicle approval (usually the GB conversion IVA if it was approved and registered in the EU), then DVLA registration and tax. Insurance has to be in place before any UK road use.
  • Laid Up Under SORN - a Renault declared SORN and kept off the road doesn't legally need cover. If it's neither SORN nor insured, the keeper can be fined £100, or up to £1,000 in court.
  • Read The Small Print - a quote may come with conditions about where the camper is kept, what security it has or how often it's checked. Breaking one can put a related claim at risk.

Renault Motorhome Licence Requirements

The licence you need follows the MAM (maximum authorised mass, the most the vehicle may weigh fully loaded) and, on the new Master, the fuel as well. Renault's UK brochure lists the Master at 3,500 or 4,000kg gross.

  • Car Licence Up To 3,500kg - category B covers a petrol, diesel or hybrid motorhome up to 3,500kg, which takes in a 3,500kg Master conversion.
  • 4,000kg Diesel Master Needs C1 - a diesel Master plated at 4,000kg sits in the C1 band (3,500kg to 7,500kg), so a car licence on its own isn't enough to drive it.
  • The Electric Exception - for electric or hydrogen vehicles, category B stretches to 4,250kg. An electric Master motorhome up to that weight can be driven on a car licence, where the 4,000kg diesel can't.
  • Car Test Before 1997 - a licence from before 1 January 1997 usually includes C1, covering vehicles up to 7,500kg. Look up your licence record online before relying on it.
  • Gaining Or Keeping C1 - adding C1 after 1997 means a D4 medical, a provisional licence, a theory test and off-road and on-road tests. Pre-1997 C1 lasts until your licence expires, usually at 70, then is renewed by post to the lorry medical standard. Test-passed C1 renews every 5 years from 45 with a D4, and yearly from 65.

Habitation Cover For A Renault Camper

Habitation checks aren't required by law for private use, but most manufacturers recommend one each year and some policies or warranties ask for it. With older and imported Renault campers there may be no maker to call, so your own records carry more weight.

Older Bodies And Seals

On a Master coachbuilt from a maker that's no longer trading, roof lights, window frames and body seals are worth a close look before you buy. A dated damp reading from a habitation check shows the body's condition if you later need to claim.

Gas, Heater And Cooking

The hob, heater and fridge normally sit under the habitation section. The gas safety rules don't apply to a privately used camper, though they do if it's hired out by a business, and an AWS habitation check covers the gas system either way.

Fittings, Awning And Belongings

Fitted furniture, a side awning and the things you pack usually fall under habitation or contents cover. Find your policy's contents limit and list valuable items, like bikes or cameras, separately.

Renault Motorhome Cover Levels

Third party only pays for harm you cause to others, so a stolen or burnt-out Renault camper gets nothing. Below is what each level of cover typically takes in.

FeatureComprehensiveThird Party, Fire & TheftThird Party Only
Third party injury and damage (legal minimum)YesYesYes
Fire and theft of your Renault camperYesYesNo
Accidental damage to the vehicle and living areaYesNoNo
Fixed habitation fittings and appliancesOften includedProvider-dependentNo
Personal belongings on boardOften included, within a limitProvider-dependentNo
Agreed value on an older or rarer modelOften availableProvider-dependentNo
Basic third party cover across the EU (legal minimum)YesYesYes
Full cover when touring abroadOften included, with a day limitProvider-dependentNo
Recovery suited to a motorhomeOften add-onAdd-onAdd-on
Uninsured driver promise (excess back if not at fault)Often includedProvider-dependentNo

Features, limits and conditions differ from one provider to another, so read the policy wording before you buy.

Cover Tip: On a less common Renault camper, agreed value can matter more than usual, because there may be few similar vehicles to set a market value after a loss. Comprehensive is the only level that adds accidental damage to your own vehicle, so check its habitation and contents sections as well.

What May Not Be Covered On A Renault

A Renault camper claim can fall down on paperwork as easily as on the damage itself. Here's what a standard Renault motorhome policy usually doesn't cover.

Standard Exclusions

  • Driving An Import Too Soon - Using an imported SpaceNomad or Ahorn on UK roads before approval, registration and tax can lead to prosecution, unless you're driving it to a pre-booked MOT or approval test. Insure it before even that trip.
  • A 4,000kg Diesel On A Car Licence - A diesel Master plated at 4,000kg needs C1, or a pre-1997 licence that includes it. On a car licence alone you aren't licensed to drive it, and your insurer can refuse the claim.
  • Undeclared Conversion Work - Fitting out a Trafic or Master yourself, or changing a converter's layout, changes the risk. Tell your insurer about the conversion and any added kit, or a claim may be reduced or refused.

Important Limitations

  • Living Aboard Full Time - Policies written for leisure use usually exclude living in the camper as your main home. Full-time living needs a specialist policy of its own.
  • Hiring It Out - Renting your Renault to paying customers falls outside a private policy. Hire use needs its own cover, and the gas safety regulations apply once it's hired out in the course of a business.
  • Missing A Policy Condition - If your policy asks for a habitation check, approved security or a named storage site, falling short may put a related claim at risk. Keep receipts and certificates together with your policy.

Optional Extras For Renault Campers

A breakdown on a long continental trip is where a basic policy can fall short. These optional extras may be worth adding to a Renault motorhome policy.

Extra days of full cover abroad above your policy's standard limit. Useful if you tour for weeks at a time rather than taking a few short trips. Check how many days your policy already allows before you book.

Breakdown cover set up for motorhomes, including recovery to a garage or back home, in the UK and abroad. Check it handles the length and plated weight of your Master or Trafic.

Laptops, phones, drones and cameras can push you over the contents limit on a camper. Gadget cover protects the portable electronics you carry on trips, whether they're on board or out with you.

May help you claim back losses you aren't insured for, such as your excess, hire costs or injury costs, after an accident that wasn't your fault, at home or on a European trip.

What Shapes A Renault Motorhome Quote?

Whether your Renault is a Trafic camper, a Master conversion or an older coachbuilt makes a real difference to the price. Here's what shapes a quote.

Key FactorImpact on your price
Base vehicle and generationA Trafic camper, a fourth-generation Master and an older Master are different vehicles. Give the base, generation, fuel and drive type, as providers may rate them differently.
Who converted itA Renault-approved Trafic conversion from Escape Campers, a coachbuilt from a maker that has stopped trading and a self-build each carry different values and records.
Plated weight and fuelA diesel Master at 4,000kg needs C1 and is taxed as Private HGV, which GOV.UK sets at £177 a year. An electric Master up to 4,250kg can be driven on a car licence.
Imported or UK-registeredAn import must be approved and registered with DVLA before use. Tell your insurer it came from abroad, as an import may be priced differently.
Driver age and historyYears of clean driving usually help the price. Younger drivers, or anyone with recent claims or convictions, may be quoted more, and some providers set their own minimum age for motorhome cover.
Where it's keptAn accredited storage site, a private drive and a street space each carry a different theft risk, and providers may price them differently.
Miles each yearCampers usually spend more time parked than on the move. Quote the miles you really expect to drive, as too low a figure may cause trouble at claim time.
PostcodeLocal theft and claim rates feed into the price, so the same Renault can cost more to insure in one area than another. Tell your insurer if you move, as the new postcode can change the quote.
Security fittedTrackers, alarms and steering locks may help the price. Some providers make approved devices a condition above a certain vehicle value.
Cover level and excessComprehensive usually costs more than the lower levels. A bigger voluntary excess may bring the price down, but only pick an amount you could pay out if you claimed.

The quotes you get will depend on your own details.

Price Insight: Renault campers in the UK come from many different converters and eras, from approved Trafic conversions to discontinued Master coachbuilts and European imports. Providers may rate these quite differently, so the same vehicle can draw a wide spread of prices. Describing the base, converter and year accurately gives each provider the same starting point.

Ways To Help Reduce Your Renault Premium

Letting a Renault camper policy auto-renew without comparing may mean paying more than you need to. Try the steps below, which may help lower the price.

1

Describe The Base Accurately

Give the Master or Trafic generation, drive type and fuel, plus the converter and model. An exact description means a provider isn't left guessing, and it matches what you'd tell them if you claimed.

2

Keep The Converter's Paperwork

File the conversion warranty and any approval papers with your policy. On an Escape Campers Crusader, that includes the 3-year conversion warranty.

3

Use Accredited Storage

Store your camper at a CaSSOA Silver, Gold or Platinum site where you can, and give the site's name. Some insurers discount accredited storage.

4

Keep Habitation Checks Up To Date

Have an Approved Workshop Scheme check done each year and hold on to the certificates. It may meet a policy condition and records the body's condition.

5

Set A Sensible Excess

Pick a voluntary excess you could afford to pay on a claim. A higher one may lower the price, but you pay it yourself if something goes wrong.

6

Pay In One Go

Pay the year's cost upfront if you can. Monthly payments usually carry interest (the APR), which adds to what you pay overall.

Saving Tip: Paperwork helps on a less common camper. A converter's warranty record, dated habitation checks and an accurate description of the base vehicle may leave a provider with fewer unknowns. Some insurers also offer a discount for storage at a CaSSOA-accredited site.

How To Compare Renault Motorhome Quotes

It takes a few minutes to compare Renault motorhome insurance from UK insurance providers. Get started above.

1

Add Your Renault Details

Enter the base (Master or Trafic), converter, model, year, value, mileage and postcode. It takes a few minutes.

2

Match Weight, Fuel And Licence

Check the MAM on the V5C or weight plate and whether the Master is diesel or electric, then make sure your licence covers that weight.

3

Set Cover Levels Side By Side

Compare third party only, third party fire and theft and comprehensive, then read the habitation and Europe terms.

4

Add The Extras You Want

Decide whether extended European cover, motorhome recovery, gadget cover or legal expenses fit how and where you use your Renault camper.

5

Choose A Start Date

Set the date you'd like the policy to start from. Your certificate and policy documents follow once payment is made, ready for your first trip.

What Our Expert Says

Renault motorhomes are a smaller, more mixed group in the UK than most. No current UK coachbuilt range on the Master was found when this page was checked in October 2026, so the Renault you're insuring is most likely a Trafic campervan, a Master van conversion, an older coachbuilt or a vehicle brought in from Europe.

That makes the build history the thing to pin down. Lunar built Roadstar and Telstar low-profiles on the Master in Preston from 2016, but it went into administration in 2019, so there's no maker left to ask about records or support. Give the converter, model and year on the quote, and keep any service and habitation paperwork that came with the vehicle.

Two Renault campers you may read about weren't on sale new in the UK when this page was checked in October 2026. The Trafic SpaceNomad launched in France, Belgium and Switzerland, and the Ahorn motorhome range on the new Master starts its sales in Germany. If you bring one in, it needs vehicle approval and DVLA registration first, and insurance before it turns a wheel on a UK road.

Renault Camper And Motorhome Questions

Can I Buy A Renault Trafic Spacenomad In The UK?

Not new from Renault in the UK, as at October 2026. Renault launched the SpaceNomad in France, Belgium and Switzerland, and it's converted near Angers by Groupe Pilote. If you import one, it needs vehicle approval, then DVLA registration and tax, and insurance before any UK road use.

Who Converts Renault Trafic Campers In The UK?

Escape Campers is one. It describes itself as an officially Renault-approved converter, and its Crusader comes with a 3-year conversion warranty. Give the converter and model on your quote, as the conversion adds to what the van is worth.

Can I Drive A 4,000kg Renault Master Motorhome On A Car Licence?

Not if it's a diesel. A diesel Master at 4,000kg needs C1, or a pre-1997 car licence that includes it. Electric vehicles are treated differently, because category B covers them up to 4,250kg, so an electric Master at 4,000kg can be driven on a car licence.

Are There New UK Coachbuilt Motorhomes On The Renault Master?

Not as at October 2026. No current UK coachbuilt range on the Master was found when this page was checked, and the new Ahorn motorhome range on the Master started its sales in Germany. Used options include Lunar's Roadstar and Telstar low-profiles, which Lunar launched on the Master in 2016 and built in Preston.

Is An Older Lunar Or Master Motorhome Harder To Insure?

It can take more care. Lunar went into administration in 2019 and the business that bought it was wound up in 2022, so there's no maker support for a Roadstar or Telstar. Agreed value and a recent habitation check matter more on an older build, and a provider may ask extra questions.

Does The V5c Body Type Change My Renault Camper Insurance?

Not directly. According to DVLA, the V5C body type is about appearance and identification, and it doesn't decide the insurance category or speed limits. A Trafic or Master conversion can still be used as a camper if the V5C says van, as long as it has the required fixed internal features, so tell your insurer about the conversion either way.

Can I Take My Renault Camper To Europe?

Yes. Every UK policy includes the legal minimum third party cover in the EU, and you don't need a green card there or in Switzerland, Norway or Iceland. Full cover abroad depends on your policy and often has a yearly day limit. Carry your V5C, and a UK sticker in Spain, Cyprus and Malta.

What Happens After I Submit My Details?

Clean Green Cars introduces you to UK insurance providers or regulated brokers offering cover for Renault motorhomes and campers, based on your base vehicle, converter, licence and storage. You can then compare prices, cover and extras before choosing whether to buy.
