Why Compare Chausson Motorhome Insurance?

Base Vehicle And Weight Count

the Ford or Fiat base, the layout and the plated weight all feed into the price. Two Chaussons of the same age can come back with very different quotes.

Parts Run Through Trigano Service

Chausson's spare parts are managed by Trigano Service, which handles 50,000 references with 30,000 in stock, for certified dealers. Repair terms still vary between policies, so compare how each one handles your Chausson.

Secure Storage May Lower The Price

a CaSSOA-accredited site or a working tracker may bring the quote down. Clean Green Cars introduces you to UK insurance providers offering Chausson motorhome cover, so you can compare quotes in one short form.

Chausson Motorhome Insurance At A Glance

  • Chausson Specifics - Chausson is a French brand owned by Trigano. It began building in 1980 and assembles every motorhome at Tournon-sur-Rhône. The current UK line-up covers low-profiles, slim S low-profiles, overcabs, vans and the X range, in sport, titanium, exclusive and first trim lines.
  • Insurance Is A Legal Requirement - you need at least third party cover to drive a Chausson on a road or other public place, under the Road Traffic Act.
  • Car Licence Weight Across The UK Range - every current UK model page lists 3,500kg, so a car licence (category B) covers it as standard. Check the V5C if your Chausson was ordered on a heavier chassis.
  • Ford Or Fiat Underneath - low-profiles, slims and overcabs are built on the Ford Transit, and the vans and X range on Fiat. The quote form asks for the base vehicle, so have the V5C to hand.
  • Habitation Cover Is A Separate Part - fixed appliances, furniture, the awning and your belongings usually fall under habitation and contents cover rather than the motor section.
  • Compare Quotes - see quotes from UK insurance providers for your Chausson model, postcode, storage and touring plans. The main motorhome insurance page covers the wider rules.

Is Insurance Required For A Chausson Motorhome?

Yes. You need at least third party insurance to drive a Chausson on a road or other public place, and that includes the short run from a storage site to your drive. Being caught uninsured can mean a £300 fixed penalty and 6 penalty points (an IN10 endorsement), and the police can seize the motorhome.

  • Every Road Trip Needs Cover - the law applies to any use on a road or public place, however short. If the case goes to court, the fine is unlimited and you could be disqualified.
  • A SORN Chausson Doesn't Need A Policy - a motorhome kept off the road and declared SORN does not need insurance by law. Laid-up fire and theft cover can still protect it while it's off the road over winter.
  • Bought In France? Approval Comes First - UK-spec Chaussons are sold through UK dealers. One brought back from France needs vehicle approval, then DVLA registration and tax, and insurance before it's driven anywhere, even to a pre-booked test.
  • Policy Conditions Can Apply - some providers may make secure storage, a working tracker or a yearly habitation check a condition of cover, so read the schedule before you buy.

Chausson Licence Requirements By Weight

Most Chausson owners only need a car licence. Every current UK Chausson model page lists a maximum authorised mass (MAM, the most the vehicle may weigh fully loaded) of 3,500kg, which is the top of category B. The quote form asks which licence you hold, so match it to the weight on your V5C.

  • Category B - Up To 3,500kg - a petrol, diesel or hybrid motorhome up to 3,500kg MAM can be driven on a car licence, rising to 4,250kg for an electric or hydrogen model. That takes in every Chausson on the current UK range in its standard form.
  • Heavier Chassis Options - some models can be ordered on an uprated chassis, such as the Ford 4T1 option listed for the 640 or the Fiat 4T4 option on the X550. Plated over 3,500kg, a petrol or diesel Chausson needs C1.
  • Towing Behind A Chausson - on a car licence you can tow a trailer up to 3,500kg MAM, within the vehicle's own towing limit and a 7,000kg combined total. If you passed before 1 January 1997, the combined limit is usually 8,250kg.
  • C1 - 3,500kg To 7,500kg - if you passed your car test before 1 January 1997, your licence usually includes C1. If you passed later, adding it means a D4 medical, a provisional licence, then theory, off-road and on-road tests. Driver CPC doesn't apply to private leisure driving.
  • Keeping C1 After 70 - pre-1997 C1 lasts until your licence expires, usually at 70. To keep it, you renew C1 by post and meet the higher lorry medical standard. With a test-passed C1, renewal comes every 5 years from 45 with a D4 medical, and every year from 65.

What Habitation Cover Means On A Chausson

A Chausson policy usually has two halves: motor cover for the Ford or Fiat base, and habitation cover for the living space built on top. A habitation check isn't a legal requirement, but some policies need one, and Chausson's water-tightness warranty needs a yearly network check. Here are the three areas that matter most.

Water-Tightness Warranty

Chausson guarantees water-tightness for 7 years on its overcabs and low-profiles, as long as a certified member of the Chausson network checks it every year. It names those two types only, so check whether your model qualifies. Sudden damage from a storm or accident usually falls under your habitation cover instead.

Diesel Heating And Appliances

UK Chaussons such as the 640 use a Truma or Webasto heater that runs on the vehicle's own fuel. The heater, cooker, fridge and other fixed appliances usually sit under habitation cover. There's no legal annual gas check for a privately used motorhome, though a habitation check looks at any gas system fitted.

Awnings, Solar And Belongings

A wind-out awning, roof solar panel and your belongings inside usually come under habitation and contents cover. Every policy sets a contents limit. Check it, and list bikes, laptops and other high-value items separately if they'd take you over.

Cover Levels Explained

Pick third party only and a Chausson stolen from storage leaves you with nothing back for the motorhome itself. Here's what each level of cover tends to include on a Chausson.

FeatureComprehensiveThird Party, Fire & TheftThird Party Only
Liability to third parties (legal minimum)YesYesYes
Fire and theft of your ChaussonYesYesNo
Accidental damage to your own ChaussonYesNoNo
Habitation cover (fixed appliances, fittings, awning)Often includedProvider-dependentNo
Personal belongings inside the motorhomeOften included up to a set limitProvider-dependentNo
Agreed value settlement on your ChaussonOften availableProvider-dependentNo
Windscreen and window coverTypically yesProvider-dependentNo
EU driving cover (third party minimum)YesYesYes
Full cover on European toursOften included, within a day limitProvider-dependentNo
Motorhome breakdown and recoveryOften add-onAdd-onAdd-on
Uninsured driver promise (no excess when not at fault)Often includedProvider-dependentNo

Features, limits and conditions vary between insurance providers, so check the policy wording before you buy.

Cover Tip: Even a compact Chausson van or slim low-profile is a large sum to lose. Comprehensive is the level that pays towards damage to your own Chausson, while third party fire and theft leaves accident repairs to you. Read the awning, solar, contents and habitation sections as closely as the price.

What May Not Be Covered

One missed condition can leave a Chausson claim unpaid. Here's what a standard Chausson motorhome policy usually leaves out.

Standard Exclusions

  • Driving On The Wrong Licence - Every current UK Chausson model page lists 3,500kg, but an uprated chassis takes it over the car licence limit. Drive a petrol or diesel Chausson over 3,500kg without C1 (or pre-1997 rights) and you aren't licensed, so your insurer can refuse the claim.
  • Missed Habitation Or Warranty Checks - If your policy makes a yearly habitation check a condition, a damp or appliance claim may be refused when it's overdue. Missing the yearly Chausson network check can also put the 7-year water-tightness guarantee at risk.
  • Storage Away From The Declared Site - Some providers make secure storage a condition of cover. Leaving your Chausson somewhere else, even for a few nights, may invalidate a theft or vandalism claim if the schedule names a particular site.

Important Limitations

  • Undeclared Extras And Changes - Solar panels, lithium batteries, bike racks, satellite domes and a replacement awning add value and change the risk. Kit from Chausson's option packs counts too. Tell your insurer about anything that isn't part of the standard spec.
  • Hiring It Out - Renting your Chausson out, or using it to carry paying passengers or goods, isn't covered by a private motorhome policy. Hire needs specialist cover, and hiring it out as a business also brings the gas safety regulations into play.
  • Trips Past The European Limit - Full cover abroad is often limited to a set number of days in each year. Go over it on a long French tour and you may only have the legal minimum third party cover until you get home. Check the limit in your policy wording.

Extras Worth Considering

Skip motorhome breakdown cover and a failed Ford or Fiat base on a French autoroute could mean a large recovery bill. These extras may be worth adding to a Chausson policy.

Raises the number of days a year your Chausson has full cover abroad. It suits owners heading south through France for weeks at a time rather than taking UK weekends away.

A standard car breakdown service may not be able to recover a full-size motorhome. Motorhome breakdown cover is usually set up for a loaded 3,500kg coachbuilt, at home and abroad.

Laptops, tablets, cameras and drones can push past your contents limit. Gadget cover protects the portable electronics you carry in your Chausson, at home or on site.

Motor legal expenses may help you recover costs your policy doesn't pay, such as your excess or a personal injury claim, after an accident that wasn't your fault.

What Affects The Cost?

Your Chausson's value, where it's kept overnight and how far you drive it usually move the price most. Here are the factors insurers weigh.

Key FactorImpact on your price
Chausson model and valueThe model, layout, trim line and option packs set the insured value. A higher value usually means a higher price, while a compact van or slim model with fewer extras tends to cost less to cover.
Driver age and experienceInsurers look at the age and driving record of everyone named on the policy. Older drivers with clean licences often pay less, while younger or newly qualified drivers usually pay more.
Home postcodeWhere you live affects the price because theft and claims rates vary by area. Two owners with identical Chaussons can get different quotes just because of their postcodes.
Overnight storageA CaSSOA-accredited storage site, graded Silver, Gold or Platinum, may bring a discount with some insurers. A locked drive may sit in between, and a roadside spot in a busy area tends to cost most.
Annual mileageA Chausson used for holidays usually covers fewer miles than a daily car. Give an honest estimate, because a true low figure may help the price and an understated one can cause problems at claim time.
Plated weight and chassisA standard 3,500kg Chausson and one on an uprated Ford or Fiat chassis are different risks. The heavier one needs a C1 driver and is taxed as Private HGV rather than Private/Light Goods, so give the insurer the weight from the V5C.
Bought in the UK or abroadUK-spec Chaussons come through UK dealers. If yours was bought in France, tell your insurer it's an import and which side it steers from, as some providers price or accept imports differently.
Habitation check recordA current check that meets any condition in your policy supports the quote. An overdue one may affect the price or the cover, so keep each certificate with your documents.
Security devices fittedAn alarm, wheel clamp or tracker may help the price. Chausson's optional Pack Smart includes a GPS tracker, so tell your insurer it's fitted and check whether they recognise that system.
No-claims historyInsurers usually reward years without a claim with a lower price. Some may also take a claim-free record on another vehicle into account, so mention it when you quote for your Chausson.
Cover level and settlementComprehensive usually costs more than third party fire and theft. Agreed value can add a little to the price, but it fixes the payout figure before anything goes wrong.

The quotes you get depend on your own details.

Price Insight: Set the sum insured from your purchase paperwork, including any option packs, rather than a round guess. The value feeds the price, and so do storage, postcode and your driving record. A CaSSOA-accredited site and a working tracker may also lower the quote.

Ways To Help Reduce Your Premium

Renew without comparing and you may pay more than you need to for your Chausson. Here are some practical ways that may help lower a Chausson quote.

1

Store At A Cassoa-Accredited Site

Keep your Chausson at a site accredited by CaSSOA, the UK scheme for secure caravan and motorhome storage, and give the exact site on the form. Some insurers offer a discount for it.

2

Activate The Pack Smart Tracker

Switch on any GPS tracker your Chausson came with and keep the subscription live. Ask whether your insurer counts it, as some providers only recognise approved systems.

3

Keep Up The Yearly Network Check

Book the yearly check with a certified Chausson network member. It keeps the water-tightness guarantee on overcabs and low-profiles in place and gives you a service record if you claim.

4

Give A Realistic Mileage

Estimate your miles from last year's touring rather than guessing. A true low figure may lower the price, while an understated one can cause problems if you need to claim.

5

Match The Value To The Spec

Set the insured value to cover your Chausson plus its option packs and extras. Too low and a write-off leaves you short, too high and you pay for cover you can't use.

6

Pay For The Year Up Front

Pay annually if you can afford it. Monthly instalments usually carry interest (shown as an APR), which adds to the total cost of covering your Chausson.

Cost Tip: Keep the yearly Chausson network check, your storage site details and the tracker subscription in one folder. Together they support your warranty, answer the insurer's questions quickly and back up any claim. Honest mileage and a clean licence are also part of what insurers weigh.

How To Compare Quotes

Comparing Chausson motorhome insurance quotes takes a few minutes. Get started above.

1

Share Your Chausson Details

Enter the model, year, layout, value, yearly mileage and postcode. It takes a few minutes.

2

Check The Plated Weight

Confirm your licence category and the weight on the V5C, especially if your Chausson has an uprated chassis.

3

Compare Cover Levels

Look at third party only, third party fire and theft and comprehensive side by side, then read the habitation and contents sections.

4

Choose Your Extras

Pick European cover, breakdown, gadget and legal expenses to suit how and where you tour in your Chausson.

5

Pick A Start Date

Choose when your cover starts. After payment, the provider sends out your certificate and documents.

What Our Expert Says

Chausson is a Trigano brand that has built motorhomes since 1980, and it assembles every one at Tournon-sur-Rhône in France. Every current UK model page lists a 3,500kg maximum weight, and that shapes how you insure one. Most owners can drive one on a car licence, which keeps the quote form simple.

The detail that catches people out is the chassis. Low-profiles, slim S models and overcabs are built on the Ford Transit, the vans and X range on Fiat, and a few models offer either. Some can also be ordered on a heavier chassis, so check the plated weight on your V5C before you assume a car licence covers it. A wrong weight on the quote form may cause problems if you ever claim.

The other one is the warranty. Chausson's 7-year water-tightness guarantee covers overcabs and low-profiles only, and it depends on a yearly check by a certified member of the Chausson network. It isn't insurance, so it doesn't cover storm damage, theft or a crash. Keeping those yearly checks up to date does give you a clear service record if a damp claim ever comes up.

Chausson Insurance Questions

Can I Drive A Chausson On A Car Licence?

Yes, in most cases. Every current UK Chausson model page lists a maximum weight of 3,500kg, and a category B car licence covers petrol, diesel and hybrid motorhomes up to that limit. The exception is a Chausson ordered on an uprated chassis, which takes it over 3,500kg. You'd then need C1. If you passed your car test before 1 January 1997, your licence usually includes it.

Does Chausson's 7-Year Warranty Replace Habitation Cover?

No. The warranty guarantees water-tightness for 7 years on overcabs and low-profiles, as long as a certified member of the Chausson network checks it every year. It deals with leaks from the build, not sudden damage, theft, fire or your belongings. Habitation cover handles those, so the two do different jobs.

Does A Chausson Need A Gas Safety Certificate?

Not by law, if you use it privately. The gas safety regulations don't apply to a privately used motorhome, only to one hired out in the course of a business. Your policy may still ask for a yearly habitation check, which looks at any gas system fitted. UK Chaussons such as the 640 heat with a Truma unit that runs on the vehicle's own fuel.

Can I Take My Chausson Touring In France?

Yes. Every UK policy gives at least the legal minimum third party cover in the EU, and you don't need a green card there. Full cover for theft or damage abroad depends on your policy, and many set a day limit each year. Take your licence, V5C and insurance details. A UK sticker is required unless your plate carries the UK identifier with the Union flag, and in Spain, Cyprus and Malta you need one regardless.

Will The Pack Smart Tracker Lower My Chausson Quote?

Not automatically. Chausson's optional Pack Smart includes a vehicle GPS tracker, and Ford-based models can also be located through FordPass. Tell your insurer exactly what's fitted and ask whether it counts.

I Bought My Chausson In France. Does That Change Anything?

It can. UK-spec Chaussons are sold through UK dealers, so one bought in France is treated as an import. It needs vehicle approval (usually the GB conversion IVA for an EU-registered vehicle), then DVLA registration and tax. Insure it before it's driven anywhere, even to a pre-booked test, and tell your insurer it's an import.

Is Agreed Value Worth Having On A Chausson?

It can be. With market value cover, the insurer usually pays what your Chausson was worth just before the loss, which can be hard to pin down on a well-specced motorhome with extras. Agreed value fixes the payout figure when cover starts. It may add a little to the price, so weigh that against the certainty it gives.

What Happens After I Submit My Details?

Clean Green Cars introduces you to UK insurance providers and brokers that may quote for your Chausson. They use the model, licence, postcode and storage details you give. You can compare the cover, price and extras on each quote, then buy direct from the provider you pick.
