What the Writer Says…
DD10 is one of the most serious endorsement codes on the UK driving licence. It records a conviction for causing serious injury by dangerous driving under Section 1A of the Road Traffic Act 1988 - an offence created by the Legal Aid, Sentencing and Punishment of Offenders Act 2012 to fill the gap between DD40 (dangerous driving) and DD80 (causing death by dangerous driving).
Before 2012, a driver who caused devastating injuries through dangerous driving could only be charged with DD40, which carried a maximum of 2 years in prison. Parliament considered this inadequate, and Section 1A was introduced with a maximum sentence of 5 years. "Serious injury" means grievous bodily harm - broken bones, permanent disfigurement, injuries requiring surgery, or lasting disability.
