What the Writer Says…
Accident offence codes are among the most misunderstood conviction endorsements. AC10 and AC20 both relate to Section 170 of the Road Traffic Act 1988, which places a legal duty on drivers to stop and exchange details after certain accidents. Failing to do so is a criminal offence, even if the accident itself was not your fault.
What catches many drivers out is the severity of the penalty. AC10 and AC20 both carry 5 to 10 points, which puts them in the same bracket as some drink-drive offences for insurance purposes. If the court awards the full 10 points, you could be close to the 12-point totting-up threshold on a single offence.
