What the Writer Says…
MS70 covers driving with uncorrected defective eyesight, contrary to Section 96 of the Road Traffic Act 1988. The legal standard for driving requires you to read a standard number plate from a distance of 20 metres (about 5 car lengths). If you need glasses or contact lenses to meet this standard, you must wear them every time you drive.
The penalty is 3 points and a fine of up to £1,000, with a discretionary ban available to the court. Most MS70 convictions arise from police roadside checks where the driver is asked to read a number plate and fails. Some are detected after accidents when police carry out routine checks at the scene (GOV.UK, as at March 2026).
