What Does Our Vehicle Check Show?
- Make, model and details the core DVLA record for the vehicle
- Tax status and due date whether it is taxed and when it expires
- MOT status and history every recorded test, with mileage and advisories
- Fuel type and CO2 useful for running costs and clean air zones
- Mileage check an indication of whether the recorded mileage looks consistent
How The Official Vehicle Data Works
The vehicle check combines publicly available DVLA and DVSA records. DVLA data identifies the vehicle and shows tax-related information, while DVSA MOT records show test results, recorded mileage, advisories and failure items.
These official records are useful, but they are not the same as a full provenance check. They do not replace inspecting the vehicle, checking the V5C, confirming the VIN and considering a paid history check for finance, stolen and write-off markers.
Free Check Vs Paid History Check
Different checks answer different questions. Use the free check first, then decide whether a paid check is sensible for the vehicle and the amount of money involved.
| Check type | What it shows |
|---|---|
| Free DVLA and DVSA check | Shows core vehicle details, tax status, MOT status, MOT history, mileage readings and recorded advisories. |
| Paid history check | Can add finance, stolen, write-off, keeper and valuation signals, depending on the provider and package. |
| In-person checks | Still needed to compare the VIN, condition, paperwork, service history and what the seller has told you. |

Vehicle Check FAQs
Is This Vehicle Check Free?
Yes. The DVLA details, tax status and full MOT history are all free, with no sign-up or payment needed.
What Information Do I Need?
Just the vehicle registration. The checker pulls everything else from official DVLA and DVSA records.
Does It Show Outstanding Finance Or Write-Offs?
The free check covers DVLA and DVSA data such as tax, MOT and basic details. Outstanding finance, write-off markers and stolen checks come from a separate full history check, which is usually paid.
Can I Check Any UK Car?
You can check most UK-registered vehicles. Very new or recently re-registered vehicles may have limited records until the DVLA database updates.
Is The Mileage Check Reliable?
The mileage indication is based on recorded MOT readings. A consistent record is reassuring, but it is always worth viewing the full history and the car in person.
Can I Use It Before Viewing A Car?
Yes. Running the check before a viewing can help you decide whether the car is worth your time and what to ask the seller.
Does It Replace Checking The V5c?
No. Always check the V5C log book, VIN and seller details before buying.
What If The Vehicle Is Not Found?
Check the registration has been entered correctly. If the vehicle is very new or recently changed registration, records may take time to appear.
