How EV Salary Sacrifice Works
With salary sacrifice, an employee gives up part of gross salary in return for a car benefit. Because the sacrifice is taken before income tax and National Insurance, the net monthly cost can be lower than the gross monthly figure.
The car is still a taxable company car benefit, so Benefit in Kind tax is added back into the estimate. Electric cars usually have a low BIK rate, which is why salary sacrifice can be attractive for some drivers.
Salary Sacrifice Inputs
The estimate depends on your tax rate, the scheme price and the taxable value of the car.
| Input | How it affects the estimate |
|---|---|
| Monthly gross sacrifice | The amount taken from salary before tax and National Insurance savings. |
| Income tax and NI rates | Higher tax rates usually increase the saving on the sacrificed salary. |
| P11D value and BIK rate | These determine the taxable company car benefit added back into the calculation. |
| Included services | Insurance, servicing and tyres can make a scheme more useful than a simple lease comparison. |

EV Salary Sacrifice FAQs
How Is Salary Sacrifice Different From A Personal Lease?
Salary sacrifice is arranged through an employer and paid from gross salary. A personal lease is paid from take-home pay and has different tax treatment.
Does Benefit In Kind Tax Apply To Electric Cars?
Yes. Fully electric company cars usually have a low BIK rate, but the taxable benefit still needs to be included.
Can Salary Sacrifice Affect My Pension?
It can, depending on how the employer treats pensionable salary. Check the scheme documents or ask payroll before joining.
Is The Calculator A Tax Quote?
No. It is a guide only. Your actual cost depends on your pay, tax code, employer rules, pension setup and the vehicle agreement.
