EV Charging Cost Calculator
See roughly what it could cost to charge an electric car. Enter your battery size, efficiency and charging mix across home, public and rapid chargers to estimate your yearly charging spend.
What The Charging Calculator Shows
- Cost per full charge at home, public or rapid rates
- Estimated yearly cost based on your mileage
- The effect of your charging mix home vs public
- A figure to compare against petrol or diesel
How Charging Cost Is Worked Out
The calculator uses your battery size or efficiency, your mileage and the price you pay per kWh to estimate charging cost. Home electricity is usually the cheapest, while public rapid charging costs more, so your mix has a big effect on the total.
Charging Cost Factors
Electricity is priced differently depending on where and when you charge.
| Charging factor | How it can change the cost |
|---|---|
| Price per kWh | This is the main figure in the calculation, and it can vary widely between home and rapid chargers. |
| Vehicle efficiency | Miles per kWh changes with speed, weather, tyres and driving style. |
| Charging losses | Some energy is lost during charging, so the wall-to-wheel cost can be slightly higher than the battery-only figure. |

EV Charging Cost FAQs
Is It Cheaper To Charge At Home?
Usually yes, especially on an off-peak tariff. Home charging is typically much cheaper per mile than public rapid charging.
How Much Does A Full Charge Cost?
It depends on battery size and your price per kWh. The calculator estimates it from the figures you enter.
Does Cold Weather Affect Charging?
Cold weather can reduce range and efficiency, so real-world cost can be a little higher in winter than the estimate.
Could A Home Charger Save Money?
A dedicated home charger is usually faster and cheaper to use than a three-pin plug, and could pay for itself over time.
