How The Estimate Works

The calculator takes your mileage, divides by your fuel economy to find how much fuel you use, then multiplies by the fuel price. Because pump prices and your real economy both move around, treat the result as a planning estimate rather than an exact figure.

What Changes The Estimate?

The calculation is simple, but the inputs can move often.

InputHow it changes the estimate
Fuel priceA few pence per litre can make a noticeable difference over a year.
Real-world MPGYour actual economy is usually more useful than the official figure.
Annual mileageHigher mileage makes small MPG differences matter more.

Fuel Cost FAQs

How Accurate Is The Fuel Cost Estimate?

It is a guide. Your real cost depends on driving style, traffic, fuel price changes and your actual economy, so use it for planning rather than as an exact figure.

What MPG Should I Enter?

Your real-world MPG gives the most useful result. If you do not know it, work it out first with the MPG calculator.

Can I Compare Petrol And Diesel?

Yes. Run the calculator twice with each car's economy and the relevant fuel price to compare.

Does It Work For Electric Cars?

For EVs, the EV charging cost calculator and EV vs petrol comparison are usually a better fit.
