How to Prepare For CBT
Compulsory Basic Training (CBT) is a training day you’ll need to complete successfully in order to ride a moped or 125cc motorbike before obtaining a full motorcycle licence. CBT training is valid for 2 years, which gives you plenty of time to practice and prepare for getting your full licence. When taking a CBT course, it’s a good idea to be as prepared as possible, which is what we’ll be covering in this guide. After you’ve done your training, you’ll also want to be prepared for riding your moped or motorbike on the road by getting CBT insurance.
Key points
How Can I Best Prepare For CBT?
- Study The Highway Code: You don’t need to know The Highway Code inside out but it is a good idea to familiarize yourself with the basics, especially as they relate to mopeds and motorbikes – Things like knowing what common road signs mean, signaling and proper positioning.
- Wear suitable clothing: You should also wear suitable clothing, which means study footwear, jeans and a jacket.
- Find out what you need to bring: Some schools will provide with you a helmet and gloves but you should find out for sure beforehand.
- Sleep well the night before: This will help you to concentrate better and ensure you don’t make any major or dangerous mistakes which could mean you don’t receive your completion certificate.
- Bring your licence: You’ll need to bring your provisional or full driving licence with you, depending on which you have.

How long does CBT last once I've completed it?
Your CBT completion certificate will cover you for two years after the date it was issued, meaning you can ride a 50cc moped from 16 years of age or a 125cc motorbike if you’re 17. After two years has passed, you’ll have to do the training again unless you obtained a full motorcycle licence in that time.
