If you’re a young person looking to get into the world of motorcycles, it’s important to know what things to consider when choosing your first bike. Although it may be tempting to go for the most powerful bike you can, this isn’t always the best idea and it’s often better to start with a less powerful model and work you way up. Whichever type of bike you choose though, you will need to ensure you have it taxed and get young rider motorbike insurance.

Key points

Things To Consider When Choosing Your First Bike As A Young Rider

  • Start small: You should ideally start with smaller 50cc moped or 125cc motorbike as a young rider, since they allow you to gain invaluable experience but with a bike that isn’t too powerful, heavy or difficult to ride.
  • Maintenance and insurance costs: You should also think about maintenance and insurance costs. If you get a 50cc moped or 125cc motorbike, they shouldn’t be too expensive to insure.
  • Consider buying used: You should also consider buying a used motorbike but it’s important to exercise caution when doing this and communicate with the seller to find out why they’re selling and if there are any issues with the bike.
  • Parking space: You should also think about where you’re going to store your bike when you’re not riding it. Ideally you would have a garage to keep it in because smaller bikes can be big targets for thieves.
  • Safety: Lastly you need to think about safety. This means choosing a bike this isn’t too powerful for your experience and also getting the right safety gear for the type of bike you plan to get.

Do I need a licence to get a motorbike?

To get a 50cc moped or 125cc motorbike, you only need a provisional licence but you will need to complete CBT to ride them.

What type of insurance is available for motorbikes?

You can get the same type of cover for a motorbike as you would with a car i.e. third party only; third party, fire and theft; or fully comprehensive. You can also opt for additional types of cover such as breakdown assistance, personal injury and cover for your leathers.

In Summary

  • Smaller bikes such as a 50cc moped are a great choice to start on before you move onto something more powerful.
  • You should think about the cost of the bike, where you’re going to store it and where you’ll buy it from.
  • You will need to have your bike taxed and insured once you have.
