Driving in winter can be hazardous at the best of times but is especially tricky when you’re driving a vehicle as large as a motorhome. If it’s at all possible to delay you’re journey until the weather has improved then you should definitely do this. Failing this, below are some key tips to help you drive safely in the different weather conditions found in winter.

Driving in snow

Snow can be particularly difficult to drive in, especially when it’s compacted and starts to freeze. Because the temperature drops so much when it snows, you need to ensure that your windscreen and other windows are completely free of mist before setting off. A good tip is to let your motorhome warm up for while so you can be sure the hot air is available to clear any condensation and mist.

When you’re out on the roads, try to avoid the snow as much as you can. Be sure to leave plenty of room between your vehicle and other road users and always brake and accelerate very slowly.

Driving in hail/ice

Driving in hail or ice can be even more dangerous than driving in snow. Again, you’ll want to ensure that your visibility is good by clearing any mist/condensation from your windows before you set off. You should also test that your wipers are working perfectly when driving in hail. You should be very vigilant for black ice on the roads and drive extremely cautiously if you do have to drive over it. If you find that your vehicle does start to skid, then steer gently into it. Do not suddenly slam on the brakes as this will only make the situation worse.

Driving in heavy rain

Heavy rain is another very common driving condition you’ll need to contend with during winter. While not quite as hazardous as driving in snow, hail or ice, you still need to take the proper precautions. Ensure your visibility is good before taking off and be sure to drive cautiously and leave extra room between your vehicle and those in front of you – this is especially true when driving on the motorway.
