What is the difference between a horsebox and horse trailer?

If you own a horse and plan to transport it regularly then you’ll need to have the right equipment to do it. When it comes to transporting horses, there are two main options – a horsebox or a horse trailer. A horse trailer is essentially a mobile stable that you attach to the back of your vehicle to tow. It has enough room for the horse to be comfortable in transit and is secure enough to keep your horse safe.

A horsebox is a type of vehicle that’s specially designed for transporting horses. Horseboxes don’t look too dissimilar to a campervan and provide a perfect environment for transporting a horse in.

Which is better?

When it comes to which is better it depends on your budget and how often you plan to transport your horse. If you only transport your horse occasionally then a horse trailer is much cheaper and will have basic cover under your car insurance policy.

On the other hand if you want the best protection and fewer risks, then a horsebox would be more suitable. However since a horsebox is its own vehicle, you need to get a special type of insurance to be able to drive it legally.

Getting the right cover

Even if you own a horse trailer, it’s still a good idea to get a proper insurance policy for it. That way you’ll be covered for everything, including theft, vandalism and damage.

When you get insurance for a horsebox, you can pick from the usual cover levels i.e. third party only; third party, fire & theft; and fully comprehensive. You can also choose to get additional types of cover such as breakdown assistance and replacement trailer.
