When you work as a courier, you need to ensure that you’re well prepared and have everything you need with you. Working on a tight schedule means you need to take every precaution you can do to deal with any situation that might arise. Below is an essential motoring checklist for couriers.

Things to keep with you

Equipment for changing a punctured tyre

Spending so many hours on the road increasing your chances of having a flat tyre significantly. If this happens, you want to be able to change it yourself rather than having to call for help. Changing a tyre is a fairly simple process but is impossible without the right equipment. You should therefore ensure that you have a jack, a wheel brace and locking wheel nut adaptor with you at all times.

Water

When you’re driving for long hours, especially in hot weather, it’s easy to become dehydrated. Therefore you should make sure you have a large bottle of water with you when working.

A torch

This is especially important when working in winter when it goes darker much earlier. It might seem unnecessary if you have lights in your car but what if you have a breakdown and need to inspect under the bonnet or underneath the car itself?

Your insurance and MOT documents

If you were to be involved in a collision where somebody was hurt then the police would need to see all your documents, including your licence, insurance documents and MOT certificate.

Regular maintenance checks to carry out

Tyre pressure

Tyre pressure is one of the most important regular checks you should carry out on your vehicle. The amount of tread needed depends on the weather conditions, with 3mm tread the recommended level for wet conditions. You should also ensure that your tyres are not over or under inflated. You should check on them weekly.

Fluids

As well as checking your oil levels regularly, you should also ensure that there is enough engine coolant and that there’s plenty of windscreen washer fluid too. Making these checks could easily prevent a breakdown further down the line.

Lights

You should ensure that all your lights are working properly, including your brake lights, fog lights and hazard lights.

Wiper blades

It might seem like a minor thing but having ineffective wiper blades can actually be extremely dangerous in the wrong conditions so this is something you should check regularly.
