CO2 emissions falling rapidly

The economic downturn is having the side-effect of dramatically reducing the average CO2 output of new cars. According to research by Clean Green Cars the average CO2 figure from a new car in September 2008 was 156.7 g/km of CO2, down from 164.1 g/km of CO2 in September 2007. The reduction of 4.5% is the sharpest fall yet seen over a 12 month period. As well as being good news in itself, it has significant implications for the car industry. The manufacturers have been saying that it would be impossible to get emissions down to 130 g/km of CO2 by 2012, the target set by the EU. In fact, at the present rate of decline, the target will be met by 2012.
